The players say he is underrated. No offense to the players. He isnt underrated. He might of been 2 years ago. Maybe if the players knew about Welker he wouldnt get as open as he does every week. I find it funny players think a guy who has 2 straight 110+ rec seasons is underrated.

It's not that you're hating on Welker, it's that you're not making sense. How can he be "the most reliable receiver in the NFL" and "a first down machine", and be overrated when he's considered the second best receiver on his own team?

Also, the last time I checked, turning 3rd downs into 1st downs is a big part of what "playmakers" do.

Welker had more talent then them so he can do more things over the middle but if Welker went somewhere else instead of NE I dont see him getting 100 receptions a season.
But none of those "no name" players turned into stars. Again, the most talented receivers in the game likely could not do the job Welker does, It takes a certain skill set, and burners are not necessarily great route runners. Moss had to work to even develop a route running ability. He is no Welker, and he benefits from Welker probably as much as Welker benefits from him. The fact Moss asked Welker for offseason drills to work on his skills probably should give you a fair idea of how good Welker really is.

And Welker had 67 receptions with Miami with Joey Harrington as his QB, a guy completing 58% of his passes for a 68 QB rating, prior to coming to the Pats. That is not a mediocre season. Harrington was a bad QB, yet Welker still had statistics reflecting a pretty good season. Welker did his job. Harrington failed.

Im sorry I dont compare slot WRs to guys who can score 3 TDs in any game. Welker is a nice reliable WR. For that he isnt underrated or overrated. Hes just a beast. I think when people compare Welker to Andre Johnson it makes Welker overrated.

Do you think Welker should be compared with a WR that can go deep and score on any given play. That is what doesnt make sense. Its not his fault hes overrated. Its the fans who hype him up to such a extent that he becomes overrated.

What did Welker do in SB 42? Who won the game?

Im not trying to be a dick bringing that game up but that game proves my point. The Giants shut down Moss and pressured Brady hard all game. Did Welker win them the game? Now put 2 and 3 guys on Welker and leave Moss 1 on 1 every snap. Lets see what happens.

Don't you think the players might be referring to people like yourself that refuse to view him as a top WR?

I dont understand the point about bringing up Welker in Miami. He was a solid WR there. Just like he is now. Im only saying he is overrated when he is compared to top NFL WRs like he is.

I view him as the best slot WR in the NFL. That is what he is.

When he gets compared to playmaking WRs he becomes overrated.

If anything, Drew Brees is overrated because he is such a good fantasy QB. He throws a bit too many INT for my liking. His career TD-INT ratio is 182-104 while Brady's is 212-90 and Manning's is 349-169. Add in the fact that the guy has ZERO hardware and you have yourself an overrated QB just because of the numbers he has been able to put up in that offense for fantasy. He's only led his team to the playoffs twice (once with SD and once with NO). I can't fathom how he is on the underrated list.

No, that game doesn't prove your point. One game obviously doesn't prove your point. For the record, Welker had 11 catches for 103 yards and the team lost. Pointing to one of your earlier names, Fitzgerald had 7 catches for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns, and his team lost, too.

Using your overall logic from this post, Boldin is overrated, Steve Largent was overrated, Chris Carter was overrated, Michael Irvin was overrated and Art Monk was overrated, among many others. Not a single one of them is/was a WR that could go deep and score on every play. Using your argument, the fact that the 4 of them who are retired are generally considered among the very best to ever play wide receiver must be some sort of joke.
