Default What's the deal with comparing the Pats' philosophy with the Jets

All of the sudden on both radio stations, it is en vogue to praise the Jets' way of building a team and trash the Pats. Hosts on both radio stations are holding up this year's Jets as the way you build a football team and this year's Pats as the way you don't. Did I fall asleep and wake up in February with the Jets winning the Super Bowl and the Pats going 1-15?

They have trashed Belichick for their adversity to his first round picks pointing out Revis and how the Jets had to move up and get him and Sanchez the same. They seem to forget that their pick from last year, Gholston with the 6th pick, is still on the back of milk cartons and other high first round picks of the Jets made minimum impact to the Jets like Vilma, Bryan Thomas, and Dewayne Robertson.

They also talk about all their free agent moves and how the cap hasn't been effected. One thing they fail to realize is the Jets have pushed back money on these players and if the growth of the cap slows down considerably in a new CBA, they could be in major trouble.

Ok, I could see if the Pats went a few seasons unable to get to .500 while the Jets were contending or winning Super Bowls that these points could be valid, but we are talking two games into the season. Brady should get it together and be dominant and the defense looks better than be expected with Mayo (the Pats best defensive player) coming back at some point. I think the Pats will be in the hunt when the season is over. We still don't know if the Jets will substain this intensity on defense all year long either especially if they treat every game like the Super Bowl.

I know the media in this town want to overract to every event or game when it happens, but to start question the Patriot way after two games is a little crazy. One caller even asked if the game has passed Belichick by and the young coaches like Rex Ryan are worlds ahead of him.

When I look at Pats roster, one thing that jumps out is quality of depth on this roster. RB, DL and DB position were hurting last year and I think once the season goes deeper and injuries starts piling on most of the teams, we will come to appreciate the move. Also, from that depth, eventual starters will emerge, considering Pats decided to carry a lot of rookies on roster and those players will have solid first year experience.

While I do think Jets made few good moves here and there, I don't think its to the point where it is anything to rave about. I mean what exactly do they have show for? They spent insane about money last season and didn't even qualify for playoffs.

Just think: if that short pass to Edelman had been on the money for a TD, it's likely the Patriots win that game and there is absolutely non of this nonsense going on - and that's what it is, utter nonsense. I don't listen to sports talk radio in times like this for precisely the reasons you have enumerated. I also won't watch one second of the nightly Comcast shows because I know guys like Felger are literally orgasmic over recent events. Finally, the idea that the game has passed Belichick by is so ludicrous as to not even warrant a response. Events in Rick Pitino's life when he was here and since have proven him to be something less than an admirable individual. However, he wasn't far off in his assessment of the media around here and it's inclination, and seeming preference for, negativity.

Nice.

The thing no one asks is:

If Jenkins goes down, who's behind him?

If Revis goes down, who steps up?

And on it goes. I think we have better depth and over the long-haul that will show.

No matter what happens, until Brady gets his mojo back, people will pick on every aspect of the team.

As soon as we're 10 points ahead in any game, everyone will think differently.

The team has numerous issues on the field, but I think they all stem from Brady. More on that in some other post when it's relevant, I guess.

Agreed. And from the look of it, I doubt Jenkins will last full season and he is perhaps their most important player on D.

Actually, it does:

Patriots: Excuse me, sir, do you have a season ticket?
Idiot: Yes.
Patriots: Not anymore.

Who cares what the mediots say.

There's plenty of ways to build a team. Given Tannenbaum some credit - he's made some good moves, along with some mistakes. Moving up for Revis was a terrific move. Drafting David Harris was a great move. Building the nucleus of the OL in 2006 was smart. Moving up for Keller seems to have worked. Moving up for Sanchez looks like a coup, though it's very early. Trading for Jenkins looks smart. Signing Bart Scott looks like a terrific move. They've done some good things, they have some talent on both sides of the ball, and they appear to be well coached. Good job. Of course, there have also been some apparent misses, like Gholston at #6 in 2008 and Clemons in the 2nd round.

That doesn't have anything to do with our team. What "aversion" to high picks? When we had a top 10 pick we hit gold with Seymour in 2001 and Mayo in 2008. Ty Warren at #13 in 2003 has been a solid part of our core DL. We also did well with picks in the 21-32 range in 2004 (Wilfork), 2005 (Mankins), and 2007 (Meriweather). Graham in 2002 and Maroney in 2001 were not bad picks, though neither has been quite what was hoped. Watson in 2004 was a reach but has shown flashes. We haven't really had a first round bust.

High first round picks are not cost-effective. If you hit on them, they are still an expensive way to build a team. If you miss, they are an albatross around your neck. Tannenbaum's hit on most, so he's looking pretty good right now. Low first/high 2nd round picks are much more cost-effective. We seem to have done pretty well with our 4 2nd rounders from 2009, including one player (Butler) who was definitely 1st round material.

Bottom line is, if you hit on your picks either way you look good, and if you miss you look bad. The Jets won one big game and their players have looked good, so now Tannenbaum is a genius and BB is a schmuck.

Who cares what the mediots say.
