Default Peter King: Pats and Colts in Dog Fight for Regular Season Team of the Decade

Although barring a complete collapse by the Pats and another Super Bowl win from the Steelers the Pats have the Team of the Decade title locked, the REGULAR SEASON Team of the Decade is up for grabs with the Pats having a slight advantage:

Quote:
Regular Season Team of the Decade Dept: New England and Indianapolis are in a fight to the finish for the crown of the best regular-season team of the first decade of the century. From 2000 through 2008, here are the teams with the top winning percentages:

1. New England 102-42 .703
2. Indianapolis 101-43 .701
3. Pittsburgh 94-49-1 .656
4. Philadelphia 92-51-1 .642
5. Denver 85-59 .590

Two notes: The Colts play host to Jacksonville to open the season Sept. 13, and if they win, they'd be tied for the decade lead for at least 30 hours; New England doesn't play until the next night ... Green Bay (84-60), Tennessee (83-61) and Baltimore (83-61) are knocking on the door of this top-five list.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/08/30/mmqb/2.html#ixzz0PlenhDMY

BTW, I think King is wrong about the Pats and Colts are tied for the lead for 30 hours if the Colts beat Jacksonville since the Colt and Pats would have the same amount of wins, but the Pats would still have one less loss which would make the Pats still the leaders.

This particular argument really is utterly irrelevant. REGULAR SEASON team of the decade??? History will in no way remember that. The Colts have choked in the playoffs consistently for 10 years.

Not to mention that even if you ignored the playoffs, a virtual tie in the regular season STILL is won by the Patriots as a 16-0 regular season has to be a big tiebreaker.

What's next, the pre-season team of the decade?

There's a Regular Season Team of the Decade? How about a Game 8 Team of the Decade, or a Best Team in the State of Indiana?

The Colts are also the "1 and done" Team of the Decade, managing that magnificent feat a remarkable 5 times!

It's just something to talk about. The Team of the Decade is utterly irrelevant itself. They don't give out awards for Team of the Decade, nor is it an official title. Like the Regular Season Team of the Decade, the Team of the Decade is a totally made up media creation with no real relevancy to anything.

How the hell does Peter King keep his high profile as an "NFL expert"? Especially after he was proven to have been full of feces after so-called "Videogate". He's wrong more often than he's right. I swear he gets by on the sheer volume of words he uses. His insight is no better than anyone on this forum, and worse than many of us.

Best regular season team of the decade? Who won that in the 80's? San Diego?

Heh.

On a related note: it is impossible for a team to host more than two of the five playoff games (in each conference) in the same year.

In the Patriots' six trips to the playoffs in the last eight seasons, they have hosted nine.
