Default Media truce: Globe sportswriters allowed back on WEEI [merged]

Media truce: The Boston Globe's sportswriters are allowed back on WEEI's airwaves by Boston Radio Watch

Quote:
With last month's announcement that CBS Radio would be launching a new FM sports talker 98.5 the Sports Hub on August 13, the competitive landscape in the Boston sports media was going in for a major shake-up. To gain an edge, CBS Radio's new sports radio entry was widely expected to align itself with the Globe's sports department and its on-line content platform. But this morning, it was WEEI, not the rookie sports talker, who made the big media splash. WEEI's owner Entercom pulled a large size rabbit out of the hat as The Globe and the sports radio giant announced the newspaper's writers will be allowed back as guests on all WEEI's shows effective immediately.

Default OT: WEEI and the Globe end their feud

Appartly WEEI is taking WBZ-FM seriously. It isn't a coincidence with WBZ-FM beginning next week. Apparently, Globe writers can only be in studio on Dale and Holey and can call into the Big Show and D&C.

I don't really see what difference this makes.

D&C talking over someone else doesn't really change the show, nor does Pete and the rest of the big show threatening a new guest make a difference.

Update:

Here's WEEI's media alert (Clarification to the press release below: Globe's writers can only appear live in-studio guests on midday's "Dale and Holley" show. They can only call into morning "Dennis and Callahan" and afternoon "Big Show" programs)
I guess hanging up the phone would be easier than walking out of the studio if need be.

Sorry I didn't see this thread. My take is that Globe writers will be in studio guests for WBZ FM and just call in for WEEI. It will diminish the edge that WBZ has, but not totally destroy it. The morning and afternoon drive are the biggest radio hours and the Globe will want to showcase their talent during those hours so WBZ will still have and edge there unless they cannot get ratings.

Well, it appears to be a pre-emptive strike against the soon-to-be new competition. If the Globe sportswriters were only appearing on WBZ-FM then it's a possible reason for some listeners to check out the new station. It could also result in the Globe writers talking about WBZ rather than WEEI and creating some interest in the minds of their readers.

While you are right it doesn't change either of the shows to the listeners, it's an interesting business decision. WEEI never paid this kind of attention to other sports talk radio stations such as 890 in the past.

Has anyone turned on the radio this week on the way to work and been shocked to hear SPORTS TALK on WEEI?! Neumi is back as a guest host and he refuses to do the "Headlines" segment of the D&C show, and deftly turns the conversaiton back to SPORTS TALK when Meter or someone else tries to go off track. I was actually wondering if they had Neumi on to prevent him from going to the new WBZ FM station. I really hope he gets a spot somewhere. I was seriously bummed when WEEI wouldn't show him the money and he walked. He is my favorite radio host.

It's an FM signal so no, you won't be able to pick up the new station in Nova Scotia.
