Patriots beef up with Brace
By Christopher L. Gasper
Globe Staff / July 18, 2009
With the long-term contract uncertainty surrounding nose tackle Vince Wilfork, the last thing the Patriots needed was a protracted negotiation with rookie nose tackle Ron Brace. While Wilfork enters the last year of his contract, Brace came to terms yesterday on a four-year deal with the Patriots.

Of the Patriots’ 12 draft picks, only Chung, third-rounder Tyrone McKenzie, and sixth-rounder Jake Ingram remain unsigned.
Nothing appears imminent with Chung. McKenzie, a linebacker, is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during rookie minicamp. Wynn Silberman, the agent for Ingram, said he thought the long snapper could have a deal in the next week or so.

In other team news, seventh-round pick WR Julian Edelman has agreed to four-year, $1.7987 million deal, Scout.com has confirmed. The news of the agreement was first reported by the Boston Globe.
According to a team source, Edelman was quite possibly the most impressive rookie during OTA practices. The source noted that Edelman did a good job of catching the ball away from his body and also did a nice job of coming back to the football on shorter passes.

Well, we know Reiss loves Edelman and he had the benefit of watching him. With TC in two weeks and all manner of new players, I'll be waiting to see what the eagle eyes at PatsFans will think.

We did notice a slight sense of appreciation in Reiss' OTA bulletins, but he's not what I'd call a "team source" if I was a fellow reporter writing for the Scout.com network.

It will be nice to see what Edelman has to show with the pads on. I heard he has looked impressive thus far. I'm not sure what the holdup with Chung is??

ahead of the pack signing their #2 draft choices.
Exactly, once the contracts for Ingram and McKenzie are agreed to, Chung gets the rest of the rookie pool, from there he's in the house.

Reiss loves Edleman so much he's basically said he'd put him in the 53. I'm going to be paying lots of attention to this TC. 12 picks (I don't think many of us thought they'd take so many) - is this going to be a boom or, like 07, will we be training them for the likes of the Browns, Chiefs, and the Broncos ?
Even though I've never seen him play, if he shows the Pats anything close to what Wilfork did his rookie season, Wilfork is gone. I wrote this in a similar post, but I think the hype around having a "pro bowl NT" is overrated. There were a couple of 3-4 teams that had a no name line that did better against the run than the Pats. Also, if the Pats LB's can't gather a consistent pass rush, BB will go back to his 2003/2007 roots and add a stud pass rusher. Book it!
