Details on Vollmer deal
Posted by Aaron Wilson on July 17, 2009 11:15 AM ET

The four-year contract that New England Patriots second-round offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer signed this week includes $1.76 million in guaranteed money, according to a league source.

Including a fourth-year escalator clause, the contract carries a maximum value of $3.105 million.

Vollmer is due to receive a $250,000 roster bonus on the second day of training camp this year. He's also scheduled to get a $915,000 option bonus next March.

There's another $285,000 in guaranteed money in the second year of the deal with the first-year salary guaranteed as well.

Vollmer is a 6'8," 315-pound native of Germany who developed into an All-Conference USA offensive tackle at the University of Houston.

So, let me see if I have this right for the salary cap hits:

2009: $310,000 + $250,000 = $560,000
2010: $395,000 + $285,000 + $305,000 = $985,000[?]
2011: $480,000 + $305,000 = $785,000
2012: $565,000 + $305,000 = $870,000

2012: $675,000 + $305,000 = $980,000

It is part of his 2010 salary. This is a way to fluff up the deal by explicting listing part of his 2010 salary as being guaranteed when implicitly the entire amount is. That is, there is very little chance that the Pats will release Vollmer anytime during the 2010 season after paying his option bonus in March

Please note that my guesstimates perfectly track the 25% rule.

FWIW - I think that PFT is wrong about the maximum value. If the deal does include an escalator, it would most likely increase Vollmer's 2012 salary to $1.308 million, the lowest RFA tender for that year.

With Vollmer' salaries now on the NFLPA site I am now guesstimating

2009: $310,000 + $250,000 = $560,000
2010: $395,000 + $305,000 = $700,000
2011: $510,000 + $305,000 = $815,000
2012: $650,000 + $305,000 = $955,000
