Default 10 Best Moments in Patriots History

The 10 best moments in Patriots history, by someone who's seen them all by Jim Donaldson of The Providence Journal:

Nice retrospective by Donaldson as we await the start of training camp. Donaldson lists his five top off-field Patriots moments as well as his top ten on-field moments (plays, not games) in this column. The number one moment is a no-brainer though some of the others may be a bit of a surprise.

Having grown up in Pawtucket, I am accustomed to voting early and voting often.

So, when the web site of the New England Patriots offered the opportunity to cast a ballot –– or, for us Pawtucket guys, the usual two, or three, or four ballots – for the “Top 10 Moments” of the Patriots’ first 50 seasons, how could I resist? Especially since the 2010 season will mark the fifth decade in which I’ll have covered the team. It’ll be “only” 32 actual seasons, but, because I started in 1979, it’ll be five different decades. Consequently, I have been present at many – most, actually – of the 50 great moments suggested for consideration on patriots.com.

And, upon due consideration, I have decided to divide my ballot – at least the one that appears in this column – into two sections: Top 10 On-Field Moments and Top 5 Off-Field Moments. That’s because, while the hiring of Bill Belichick resulted in three Lombardi trophies and an undefeated regular season, it didn’t exactly provide the same thrill – especially at the time – as winning those Super Bowls.

Let’s start with the Off-Field Moments:

An excellent article, written with a nice little bit of humour. I particularly appreciate number 4, the celebrations after SB XXXIX. That was the one with the group hug with Charlie and Romeo and BB, as well as BB and his dad (see sig.!) Very good choice. Ditto the love for Chuck Fairbanks.

My only quibble: I don't recognize the name of the guy who features in moments 1-3.

I think this is a very good list and probably the same picks I would have made...I would also throw in the goal line stop in INDY in 2003...

Very good overall. I hate 3 field goals as "moments" though. I'll give you the snow bowl one, but any kicker makes the others.

How about we substitute the short pass Troy turns into 23 yards and out of bounds? There's no "I keek a touchdown" without that play.

I'd put the Snow Bowl kick #2, since that was truly amazing, but for #1, as corny as it sounds, I'd probably put when the Pats came out onto the field together against the Rams rather than being announced individually. As strange as it sounds (although I'm sure a lot of you guys felt the same thing), I suddenly felt about 10x better about our chances of winning when that happened.

Another great "moment".

Still. I have to hype this. Even bigger than I remember. Without this, third and 10, way out of field goal range with about 25 seconds.

Maybe they don't even try to score and go into OT.

I distinctly remember Troy quietly turning 10 (14?) into 23 and stopping the clock and thinking "wait a minute, that's going to win it, I can't believe it."

2-10-NE 41 (:29) (Shotgun) Tom Brady pass to Troy Brown ran ob at StL. 36 for 23 yards (Adam Archuleta). Pass 14, Run 9.
Sorry, first and ten and one set up pass for six yards to the biggest upset in history.

Feel bad for Drew but Mo Lewis' hit in 2001 has to be right up there.

On the same theme, our own Christopher Price of WEEI writes Simply The Best: Our List Of The 10 Greatest Moments In Pats' History

Quote:
Over the last few months, Patriots.com has started compiling a series of “Top 10 All-Time” lists, a series that has included the Top 10 personnel moves, draft classes, rookies and opponents in the history of the franchise.

Now, as their 50th season looms, the Patriots are asking their fans to put together their own list of the 10 greatest moments in franchise history. The voting began earlier this month and closes on Aug. 1, and the results will be announced starting in October with a series of features on “Patriots All Access” and in the pages of Patriots Football Weekly.

Here’s our Top 10:
