Default Pats All-Decade Team of the 70's

Patriots team of the 70's

Some obvious choices; who is in that should not be, and who was left off that should be included?

Off the top of my head Roland James at saftey. AT least i think he was there in the '70's.

Looking at the defense the Pats have to be the longest running team to use the 3-4 as a base defense. I'm pretty sure they were the ONLY ones using it in the 70's.

Well, Parcells and Belichick got their 3-4 defense directly from Fairbanks and his DC Hank Bulloughs. Well actually indirectly since Parcells learned it when he was a LB coach in New England under Ron Ehhardt who was a legacy of Fairbanks. So considering both Parcells and Belichick have had tenures here, it isn't surprising.

From what i remember the Fins used it occasionaly, and the Pats adopted it full tiime.
I remember this being discussed during a game probably (by the bradcasting crew) in the seventies. It stuck in my head.

Almost impossible to squeeze him in but Darryl Stingley needs recognition..

Julius Adams should be in the Pats HOF.. he played well in the trenches for a lot of years, and was their only all pro for a while..

Glad to see Sam Hunt in there. I was too young to evaluate his play, but he was a favorite of me and my brother (#50 was big for his time).

Anyone here who can actually put Hunt in perspective?

I saw the team of The 1970's in person and the only change that I would have on this list is I would play Rod Shoate at Linebacker over Steve King.Other than that ,it's a very good list.

The Houston Oilers and the Pats both started playing the 3-4 around 73-74. They were the first 2 that I remember running it. Houston had Curley Culp at Nose and he was a beast. Sugar Bear Hamilton was smaller but he was also very effective. Fairbanks brought the 3-4 with him from Oklahoma along with Hamilton. As far as OLB, I never thought much of Steve King. I thought Webster, even though he was way past his prime, and Shoate were definitely better. My favorite OLB back then was Pete Barnes. He was great with a pass rush off the edge.

I don't think so.......rod shoate shined for around 10 minutes, and I think it was the early 80's
