Default NFL Competition Committee not changing overtime

There will be no change in the overtime format:

Competition Committee decides there will be no change to NFL overtime rules - ESPN

2 other items of note in the column

Quote:
the committee recommended a reseeding proposal for the draft order in future years. Under the proposal, the 20 teams that didn't make the playoffs would be seeded based on their record as it is currently formatted. The change would involve teams making the playoffs. Those playoffs teams would be seeded in slots 21 through 32 and but they would drop in the positions based on how long they last in the playoffs.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have proposed a reseeding change in the playoffs that would reward non-division winners with better records a higher playoff seed than division winners with worse records.

Of course they address the draft order after the Patriots screwed by it

I don't get how they came up with this originally since it is counter intuitive towards the whole playoff seeding system.

The wrong order helps us a lot in the second round as we have SD #2, I'm not sure we're getting screwed as much as SD is getting helped.

It's actually intuitive because the draft is supposed to help lesser teams and a worse record should indicate a lesser team. It's the way playoff teams are picked that is counter intuitive.

There's only one way it will change. When the Patriots win the toss in the Super Bowl and win on a Gostkowski field goal on the opening drive of OT.

If Polian survives the stroke he'll have, it'll be changed on the first day of the offseason.

Yeah, that's probably right. A 1--6 seeding is logical, but I don't think the League will give up the Divsional "competition" in our lifetimes.

And I'm not saying it should - if you have divisions they have to mean something - but it's not intuitive to supposedly get the top 6 from each conference in and then guarantee admittance based on being the best of four arbitrarily picked teams.

I'm saying it should. Divisions are outdated, from a time when traveling outside of your region constantly wasn't practical, so they weighted schedules to favor local teams.

Some say rivalries are born from divisions, and that's true. But sometimes the best rivalries come from non-divisional opponents. Look at Celtics-Lakers, or Pats-Colts.

Pats-Colts are born of constantly battling in the playoffs AND regular season. That goes away if you eliminate divisions.

That is awesome hahah.

The rule has to change though. Dungy is an idiot.

Belichick has the best idea: Make a shorter non-sudden death period. Let's say it's 7-10 minutes, with 4th quarter rules. If you have a drive that lasts 9 minutes, then the other team still has a chance to come back. Clock management and timeouts actually matter this way. This is the only non-controversial solution in that it does not change the rules of football. Field goals can win the game, so can goal line stands, and everything else that happens in the first 4 quarters. The 4th quarter is the most exciting quarter in any close game. Why not extend that excitement some more?
