Yeah, maybe Bill is moving away from the brainsmasher style of safety, but if he isn't none of those guys fit the bill. I DO NOT want to see Meri or Springs hitting IR.

We need a backup free safety and a backup strong safety for the future. The fact that Springs may or may not play some safety for 2009 is not relevant to the long term need.

Also, injuries do happen. I would not be Ok with going into the season with Springs being the first man off the bench at both free and strong safety.

Trade up for whom?

Bill said that Safety was evolving into a much more coverage oriented positiion. Perhaps that's why the "least" of last year's DB acquisitions stayed and played, 6'1' 204 Lewis Sanders.

But I also think the day of the TJ run stuffer ILB is gone as well. There is too much underneath coverage and inside Blitzing responsibilities needed from today's ILBs.

BTW, I don't want to trade into next year. I want to develop in 2009.

Good post.
I agree. Quit postponing the replacements and go forward in 2009. To many FAs for 2010 and if it is uncapped? Who knows. Stockpiling picks might be a mistake in 2010.

This is the perfect storm draft: a high quality draft in a year where we have lots of picks and few needs. It is also a draft with lots of fine players at the positions that we need upgraded. I don't know why so many want to move picks into 2010.

BTW, it's not like the players who might be replaced are stars, or are porjected to be top contributers.

QB Gutierrez
RB/FB Green-Ellis
OT O'Callaghan
OG/C Yates
OLB Redd
ILB Rudd
FS Spann
swing DB Richardson

This is the New England Patriots. We DEFINATELY will not trade up this year. They will trade a pick or 2 to get us an extra late 1 or high 2 next year.

Is there anyone here who's followed this team for more than the last couple years?

I'm not talking about trading up in to the top ten; I'm looking at possibly - if there was a certain player the Pats were targeting - using it to move up to #19.

As far as never trading up, do you recall the trade for Chad Jackson, or moving up in 2003 to pick Eugene Wilson, Bethel Johnson, or Asante Samuel?

What do you expect from a poster who can't spell "definitely" right?

Sure he is, he has just received his special 'red' phone that BB has issued him. He has been instructed to stay close to it. I believe Junior has one as well.
