Theory: Cassel deal is not finished, just in phase one
I have been thinking this and wanted to try and stir some convo without rehashing the threads about us getting screwed or whatever other rationalizations there may have been.
The reason I finally posted the thread was this article:
Cassel for a second-round draft pick probably would be seen as a steal. Adding Vrabel, too? That seems like tunnel-under-the-floor bank-heist stuff — again, on paper.
Quote:
Two days after the trade with New England was announced, the Chiefs were again mum on what seems like a monumentally lopsided deal.
Pioli? Unavailable. Coach Todd Haley? Evasive. Cassel? On speaker phone for his introduction to the Kansas City media. Vrabel? Also not available.
“I won’t get into specifics of that. I’m glad we have both players on the team,” Haley said Monday.
That’s it. No discussion of how the trade came together, not even a “we got a good deal.” It was calculated, tidy, somewhat mysterious. In other words, very Patriots-like.
There was a rumour yesterday that an upcoming trade between Carolina, NE and KC would book-end how this deal could look like this. The problem with that rumour is this: Peppers has not signed his tag and therefore, the Panthers can't negotiate anything.
So rather than debate all the things that have already been done to death, let's talk about what might go down BASED ON the premise the deal is only in phase one.
I know at least a few nimrods will got from the subject line to their own post re-iterating everything we've heard. That's not what I'm hoping for, though.
IF something is still coming, what could it be?
Oddities:
Trade speed.
Vrabel announced first.
Blatant lopsided-ness.
Reports of late bids at higher "value".
If we think Peppers fits in somehow (hard to imagine so far) consider the dead silence from his camp, and the fact that we're sending OLB's into the hills and setting them off on ice-floes.
I don't think anyone got screwed, I think we haven't seen it all yet.
What do you think?

Sorry but I'm pretty sure it's over. It's nice to wish there was more, but we really did only get a 2nd rounder, and the reason was due to timing and cap

"He’s the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. He goes from being a rookie that nobody is expecting anything from, to taking over with people saying he can’t do it, to winning three Super Bowls....It should already be obvious he’s the greatest quarterback to ever have played. "
Re: Theory: Cassel deal is not finished, just in phase one.
we probably could have gotten more...probably should have. whatever, we got a good pick and hopefully it will turn into something fruitful. that being said, this particular deal is over.
anything that happens in the future will be done independently of this particular trade
Re: Theory: Cassel deal is not finished, just in phase one.
I'm with you on this Jrn, I've been saying that this has been an unusuall deal, although now more of it has been coming out a lot of the mystery has been solved. Vrable being taded first still hasn't been explain. All this being said i think Vrable was dumped for salary reasons. I still think something beig is still coming ....I think Peppers would be big.
Re: Theory: Cassel deal is not finished, just in phase one.
Don't get me wrong, I think this deal is filed "as-is", but I think the teams are still working on something and it would have seemed bigger if the Pats could have waited until EVERYTHING was worked out, but the cap made that impossible.
I call the deal lopsided because we would not be talking about Jason Taylor to the extent we are had we kept Vrabel.
