Default Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Peppers

Just listening to Sirius NFL Radio and a few minutes ago Pat was telling a Pats fan who called that while its not 100% certain, but from Pat Kirwan's friend who is a close source to the Pats team says that the Pats will be going hot and heavy after Panthers DE Julius Peppers when FA begins tomorrow.

Is a Matt Cassel for Julius Peppers trade straight up, possible?

I think Matt would be going to a Carolina team who is very good already and certainly capable of winning a title in the near future.

Well the money is about the same? Isn't Peppers getting about $12 mill with the tag?

Will he accept 3.2 million per year?

I imagine if any trade for the two players goes down, it will be predicated on both players signing new deals. There is no way either team takes the other player for the franchise tag money.

But Peppers sure would address that OLB issue

You know perfectly well that will go up by $15M+ once we trade Cassel.

If Carolina traded MC for JP straight up, that would say a lot about them. I don't see Carolina trading JP straight up for Matt, they can get way more for JP.

It would be nice... but it brings 2 questions to mind.

1. Who will be standing up and playing OLB?
I am sure neither of our 2 current DE starters would want to, and who is to say that Peppers would be good at that spot. If it was a sure bet, wouldn't they have been starting a pass rushing DE like Jarvis green at OLB when we were depleted. This of is barring an injury.

2. how would this help our cap?
Basically its a very close cap hit. Which leaves us dangerously near the cap. How will we sign anybody else we need? And before anybody says it....I find it very unlikely for him to sign a new cap friendly deal.

Wouldn't Peppers require Jared Allen type money? Payroll is tight already and the Pats don't even have a legitimate corner.

That's where we'd just have to trust Belichick that he can make Peppers as an OLB work. Who knows, but the odds are with Belichick if he thinks Peppers can do it.

We'd require Peppers to sign a long term deal with would be costly over the contract but well under $15M for the first year so we'd clear a lot of money.
