Jabari Greer - May not be a cheap CB pick-up option after all...
Bummer. I thought he'd be an easy to steal, solid CB. I don't see the Pats chucking boats of money at the guy. He's a CB. In New England the kickers seem to be more popular...
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Buffalo Bills aren't stoked by the idea, but they're prepared to move on without cornerback Jabari Greer.
Greer
An NFL source close to negotiations told me Saturday morning that the Bills and Greer's agent, Mark Bloom, aren't in the same area code on financial terms. The Bills have offered five years and $20 million, but Greer is looking for closer to $7 million or $8 million depending on the length of the contract and guarantees.
What hurt the Bills' chances of re-signing Greer was Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kelvin Hayden re-signing Thursday for five years, $43 million.
Greer is the Bills' most important free agent, but it looks like they'll lose him. He's one of the top five most attractive free-agent cornerbacks and would do much better on the open market than what the Bills are offering.

We don't need him anyway. The only CB that I would have been happy throwing cash at is N.A. but the Raiders already took care of him. Personally, I think that our secondary will be in good enough shape after the draft. For the defense, I would rather us concentrate on the LB corps.

With Haden, Robinson and Scrabble all locked up, Greer and Bryant McFadden are really the only attractive CB options right now. But this sounds ridiculous. CB salaries are really out of control. I can't believe what the Colts gave Haden. Greer is coming off of an injury and is the 3rd CB in Buffalo after McKelvin and McGee, and he's looking for $7-8M/year? No thanks.

Surprise, surprise, surprise. Really folks, if you didn't expect this you are either living in Canada and are still learning the NFL, or you need serious remedial Free Agency work.

You're right, their salaries are out of whack. I think BB's philosophy has been that you can succeed with OK corners if you have an above-average pass rush. I'd rather invest money in DL and LB.

Ouch!
Dude, I could totally hit back... but I'll save it.
Really though, him being the #3 in Buffalo, I figured he'd be a cheapy.
We should really draft a corner @ #23.

Lacking your superior knowledge and insight, I guess I need "serious remedial Free Agency work".
With the Colts big contract to Hayden it seems obvious that the ante for a solid but unspectacular CB has been significantly raised, but prior to that I don't think that there was any obvious indication that anyone would even contemplate $7-8M/year for Greer. I understand that that is only his agent talking, but if they walked away from 5 years/$20M in Buffalo then that says something. I would have thought that was a reasonable offer. I could see going up to 5/$25M, but not over. This is not Asante Samuel we're talking about, it's more like Randall Gay, who signed a 4 year/$13.5M contract last year. Greer was a 7th round pick, a onetime starter who would have been an excellent nickel back, and I think the Pats could use him quite effectively, but he's not worth anything near that kind of money.
If this is where the CB market is, then you can forget about keeping Ellis Hobbs after next year, as he will easily command at least what Hayden got, and I can't see the Pats shelling out that kind of money for him. We'd better hope Wheatley and Wilhite make rapid progress in their second year.

I thought you were just learning? At least you have a number of posts asking for insight on that...sorry if I stepped too hard.

I find it absolutely laughable that the Colts threw over $8mill a year at Kelvin Hayden. That's just ridiculous. He's certainly not in the top 10 CBs in the league and probably not in the top 20.
