That said, there is an argument to be made that what is implied in the sarcasm - that BB/Pioli DO know how to draft, after all - is a bit overstated. They should get some sliver of credit for insight and "the extra mile" that went into selecting Cassel, but the idea that it's proof of their brilliance is over-the-top. They took a flyer in the 7th round. I mean, I'm glad they did, but it's not wildly outside the box.

An often-overlooked part of the draft is not wasting picks by overdrafting. Why would they draft Cassel in the third round if they were 90% certain he'd be there in the seventh? That's what makes a draft a science -- getting the player at the best possible slot. That's where the scouts earn their money. You can never draft everybody you want to, and need to prioritize who to draft and in which order, and what the contingencies are.
I remember recently he was talking about The Firm, and he implied that their last pick came down to Ruud, Guyton, or Benjarvus. BB said he drafted Ruud because he felt the other two had a better chance of going undrafted. Cassel you can understand why he was drafted and not signed as UDFA, as an agent would likely steer his client away from a team with an indestructable superstar quarterback.
