Split Second? There was almost a 2 count between when the ball skipped off Moss' hands and when Simpson hit Moss.

What does this "defenseless receiver" rule encompass? Is it just helmet to helmet? Is shoulder to helmet illegal too?
The NFL has a rule that players are not able to be on the field with their concealed weapons.

But don't worry - the NRA is working on it. Admittedly, this might cause some problems during moments of frustration in a blowout game, but then again, it might also prove a deterrent for "running up the score".

If you arrive and blast him as he catches it, you are fine. In this case the DB knew damn well that Moss didn't catch the ball and tagged him anyway. I am a DB coach and I hate the NFL's emphasis on offense but that was a good call.

No you are not. You cannot launch yourself into a receiver...irregardless of whether or not he catches the ball, or it already bounced off his hands. You can only "blast" a receiver after he catches the ball and is a ball carrier.

"According to referee Terry McAulay, the NFL has done a better job of defining what is an illegal hit and what’s not.

“It doesn’t even have to be a helmet-to-helmet hit,” said McAulay at the Chargers’ training camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

“Launching with a shoulder would be a foul too. The key is, you can’t launch at anyone that is defenseless, usually meaning receivers and quarterbacks. When you jump in the air and launch yourself into a hit, that’s a foul. If you have two feet on the ground with the ball, then you’re a runner and you’re not defenseless,” McAulay said.

If you nail him as the ball arrives and seperate him from the ball, you will not get called. I can count on one hand the amount of "launching"penalties I have seen in the NFL.

I can quote you the rule on Crackbacks, too...It doesn't mean they get called.

Even though the call was in our favor, I tend to agree. They're calling these too close. Unless it's a blatant shot at the head, helmet-to-helmet, or the ball was totally uncatchable, etc., the refs need to ease up a bit.

I thought it was a pretty good hit, half second late maybe. The NFL should just get it over with and give the players flags to wear. :banned:

MC should have been penalized for that bad throw that almost got Randy killed.
