Yet, the Patriots were absolutely giddy with the performance. [. . .]
The fact is the fourth-year man out of USC — you know the maid of honor for Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer and now Tom Brady — has reached the ceiling on his potential.
At age 26, there is no gigantic upside. He's not improving week-to-week as Patriot sycophants like to proclaim.
Hmmm . . . gee, I wonder why they were so giddy?

Re: Hector Longo completely misses the point on Cassel
They were giddy, you iddy-ot, because despite the fact that the Pats made a bunch of mistakes that should have cost them the game and would have made lots of QBs go into panic mode (even Brady is not immune to the occassional panic attack when things started to go bad), Cassel stayed cool and kept trying to win the game, which he eventually did, not by locking onto Moss or Welker (whose drops and miscues might have cost both INTs and almost the game), but by throwing a 15 yd. TD pass to the 3rd down running back, a play that I haven't seen the Pats do any time lately.
Re: Hector Longo completely misses the point on Cassel
Yes, the interceptions were all his fault. They had nothing to do with Welker tripping and falling down on a timing route (if he hadn't the pass would undoubtedly have been a 30 yard completion or so) and Moss bobbling a perfectly catchable ball into the hands of a Rams defensive back.
Yes, the Rams are bottom-feeders. Forget the fact coming off their bye they won 2 in a row against the Redskins and the Cowboys, considered two of the best teams in the NFC, and the Cowboys game was an absolute blowout.
"There are few of the reads, or checkdowns, that made Brady Brady." Yes, Longo, if you're comparing Matt Cassel to the best QB of all time, you're going to be disappointed. You could say this about any QB in the league whose first name isn't Peyton, too.
"This offense, with no Laurence Maroney, is so one-dimensional, because that's all Cassel can handle at this point." Yes, because Laurence Maroney is such a superstar that he could have carried the offense on his own.
Did the Patriots get blown out yesterday or something? How is this guy a sportswriter at all, let alone one in a Massachusetts paper?
Oh, and his fact checker missed something:
Quote:
Imagine the coach trying to sell this one to his defensive backs in the Tuesday meeting.
"Guys, we're not going to blitz them, we'll play soft coverage. All you (an undistinguished quartet of Ron Bartell, Fakhir Brown, Oshiomogho Atogwe and Corey Chavous with zero Pro Bowls among them) have to do is cover Randy Moss and Wes Welker for an indefinite length of time."
Chavous went to the Pro Bowl in 2003. Longo can't even check his own ridiculous claims.
Re: Hector Longo completely misses the point on Cassel
I thought that Cassel was getting rid of the ball much quicker yesterday, there were no five second counts. Let's not forget that Moss drop two TD passes, both are catches that you expect Moss to make. Let alone the back to back drops in the 4th quester both of which would have been more 20+ receptions.
Neither interception was a "bad" throw, although he did get away with a bad throw in the first half near the goaline when it bounced off the Rams CB.

Re: Hector Longo completely misses the point on Cassel
Hector is a Borges wannabe absent the redeeming underlying talent at his craft that barely saves Wrong from himself. Ron's piece in the Herald today comparing this team to the championship caliber prize fighter, on the heels of his poking around the edges of the abyss last week, is the difference. Hector is just a toadlike miserable putz, or the boxing equivalent of a brain damaged, undercard club fighter who never knows when to quit flailing.
