Default Downside to franchising Cassel?

If he can't be traded, he might make more money than Brady. Hard to deny him a starter's job or at least give him opportunity to get it if he's making that much.

What do you think? How much is the franchise tag for QBs?

Be hard to have that much locked up in QBs, but it might be worth it

This is a link to just the latest thread on the subject. Don't be one dimentional...read.

It's a decision/option we or they don't even need to ponder before next February, and a lot can happen between now and then...

It would be foolish to franchise him. I think people are overestimating his value.

The Pats would never franchise Cassel. That would mean they would be paying him the average of the top five salaries of quarterbacks in the NFL. There is no way he is worth that much, and doing that would cripple the Pats salary cap position - and cause them to have to dump several other players.

They are projecting at $25M under the 2009 cap, you don't franchise until late February and if you tag to trade prior to the draft he's gone by mid April if not a lot sooner leaving you with 2009 picks you didn't have before...

The Pat's franchised Tebucky Jones when they knew he was marginal and some stiff gave them a nice package of picks for him... It's called getting value for an asset with a market. The JETS franchised John Abraham for a second time when they could not afford to pay him and still got a first for him from Atlanta...

I agree..IF there was ANY thought of that..it would be then NOT now...and I think the only reason would be part of a franchise and trade situation...honestly..I think it will not happen...top 5 QBs?? no...

Good point, I hadn't considered that angle. I was primarily responding to the OP's comment that it would "be hard to have that much locked up in QBs, but it might be worth it." The point I was trying to make was that I can't see BB/SP actually paying Cassel that much and committing that high a percentage of the budget to one position, i.e. franchising Cassel and keeping (and paying) him.

How can you suggest franchising a QB when you have no idea of the cost of such a move?

And what is the logic of giving him a shot at starting because he makes startes money, that you gave him because he couldn't be traded?
