Default So the Patriots were interested in Bengals DE Michael Johnson

Who will be Franchised by Cincy. Bedard says he would have been a top target and his info wasn't from throwing darts as a dartboard.

Just curious what the feeling is around here that this means.

Just an opportunity to get a player they really like ?

Want a true bookend for Chandler with Nink being a situational player ?

Looking for a final solution at LDE with Nink hitting FA in 12 months ?

Here's the tweets, FYI :

Greg A. Bedard ‏@GregABedard

DE Michael Johnson would have been a top target for the Patriots. Bengals will tag him

Not a dartboard RT @SashV_: wheres that comment coming from about Patriots and Johnson?

I really hope that's true. Hopefully this means Bellichick has finally gotten sick of the weak pass rush.

I'm just relieved to know that Belichick wants to upgrade at LDE. If not Johnson, then someone else.

If true then I doubt we see much change at the WR position as most are expecting major overhauls.

Money needs to be spent on the past rush and/or coverage. We still have an extremely dynamic offense which was anything but complete last season with 2 of our biggest threats missing half the season and Vereen not truly emerging until late.

The problem now is that there aren't really many starting LEs available. Johnson was a good candidate. Michael Bennett is probably the only LE left on the market that I'd have interest as a starter. Other than that, the Pats would be picking from guys who need to play OLB (Kruger, Spencer), a pure speed guy who doesn't defend the run (Avril), and a bunch of older, more situational rushers (Freeney, Abraham, Umenyiora).

If this is a direction they're looking at then Michael Bennett could be a target. Strong run defender and good pass rusher in the early part of his prime at 27 and not expected to be tagged.

You beat me on him - time to start looking at DE in the draft I guess, starting with enormous Margus Hunt.

Id be surprised if the Bucs dont tag him. It looks as though they have alot of cap room (over 30 mil.) and no other big time free agents. 11.1 mil for Bennett for one season may be steep, but it would keep the Bucs in control. I wonder if they do target a someone to start opposite Jones if Ninks time is up. 2.5 cap hit this season and a UFA after this season.

Would like to see the Pats improve the pressure from the middle of the line as well. Melton, Randy Starks or Des Bryant would be nice.

Well easy answer to this question is don't pass over the guy in the draft when you had a chance to draft him. I can't stand how BB talks up these players that he passes over in the draft time and time again.

Considering that the Pats' last pick before Johnson was Vollmer, I think passing over him worked out just fine.
