Vollmer is an excellent RT, but his mobility has declined in the past year or two. Also, those back issues are not something to dismiss easily. Truth is, Vollmer has only played 5 games at LT, the last time being a few years ago as an injury replacement. Paying him big bucks to play LT seems like a reach. If you want to argue that he provides a team insurance having the ability fill-in at LT, then OK. But making him your main man protecting the backside of your franchise QB doesn't make good sense. The issue teams are going to have is how many LT's are actually going to be on the market. Jake Long is declining and will command top dollar. Ryan Clady will be tagged. Brandon Albert will likely be re-signed or tagged. Will Beatty is the Giants top priority and likely to re-sign. Sam Baker is expected to re-sign. Then you have other RT's like Andre Smith, Phil Loadholt and Gosder Cherilus. Vollmer might actually be the best LT option in the free agent market. Add to that a relatively weak LT draft class with only 3 quality LT prospects and I think Vollmer's value could potentially be sky high. The back issue will definitely be a concern, but teams might not have a choice but to take a risk.
