Harvin is too injury prone I think. A fantastic player but he seems to go down at some stage every season.

Remind us again what Ras IR's rookie contract was worth. The problem with trading for a vet is you're investing not only the pick but a boatload of cash.

(Ras IR is making in 4 years half of what Harvin is looking for per year on a 5-6 year deal.}

er a league source, Harvin currently is expected to stay away from offseason workouts and training camp absent a new deal.

He's definately worth a 2nd, as long as he can be signed and is not a 1 year rental. The reality is that there are WR needy teams with a ton of cap space (Cleveland, Miami) that have higher 2nd round picks then the Pats. We probably won't have a shot at him. Our hope would be that the Phins and Browns get their WRs in free agency so they don't have to give up a 2nd and that leaves Harvin for us.

Dowling really only had one injury year, but the comparisons aren't the same anyway.

First, Harvin has a history of severe migraines. That is a serious condition that could ultimately end his career prematurely at some point. And that doesn't even address his miriad of injuries dating back to his college days.

Second, Harvin is in the last year of his deal. Either he will be an one year rental or demand a top contract. Dowling might have been a 2nd round pick, but he was under contract for four years for cheap money. Lower risk.

Third, Harvin has been a problem child since college including getting into a tirade shouting match with Leslie Frazier. He has had off the field problems for a while now. He has had drug issues in the past (reports he was suspended in Florida for failing a drug test although it was reported as an injury). His temper was a red flag to why many teams avoided drafting him.

If his injury history was the only concern, I might agree with you. But you are adding he is a hot-tempered head case and is in the last year of his deal looking to cash in (and possibly holding out if he doesn't).

Also, remind me when Dowling had a history of being a problem child like Harvin. Or has a drug past like Harvin?

Absolutely not worth the resources. It essentially costs a second round pick and the possibility is there that the two sides won't come to an agreement on a new contract. Welker has been better, more durable, and is a proven commodity in this offense. Use the second rounder on a big bodied WR and sign Welker.

Harvin wants a new deal or he is holding out...so he would have to get a new deal right away if we traded for him. When welker goes ( i think he does ) we will need someone

No need for a second now. He is forcing their hand. We'd be fools to give up a second and a rich contract. We wouldn't do that anyway. If we are even to go in this direction highly doubt we give a high pick. Personally think we are retooling the position with 2 vertical WR's. A 2nd round pick after the above quote and $ for a WR that wants his? When was the last time the first team you thought after you knew those facts was NE pats?

Harvin's migraines are not an issue. He was diagnosed for sleep apnea and has reportedly not had any problems since. In the one sleep test they did, his heart stopped beating 8 times overnight for about 10 seconds at a time. He now wears a mask that regulates his breathing so that doesn't happen.

(I still don't want him for a second and $10M a year. For a 2012 3rd, 2013 3rd, and something closer to $8.5M a year, then I'd be awfully tempted.)
