We’re only a few days in and it’s pretty obvious that it’s going to be a long stretch before Tom Brady returns to take over the reigns of the offense in Week 5.

Brady’s four-game suspension to kickoff the year is already rearing its ugly head, which has been evident over the past two days as Bill Belichick has faced the media.

Wednesday saw a plethora of questions regarding the situation at quarterback, and Belichick even came out and immediately ended any debate by naming Brady the starter when his four game banishment by the league comes to an end.  Given Brady’s body of work and the fact that Belichick has said on plenty of occasions that “there’s no other quarterback he’d rather have”, that statement didn’t come as a surprise.

However, one reporter on Friday pursued the matter, first asking Belichick if he could remember a time where the coach had ever clarified a starting quarterback so early into camp, to which Belichick replied, “I don’t know.”

The reporter followed that question up with “What if Jimmy [Garoppolo] plays better?”

Belichick shot back, “Look, I told you what’s going to happen,” with the coach obviously deferring,  like he’ll likely be doing throughout the remainder of the preseason and over the span until Brady comes back, to what he said Thursday about the fact there’s no doubt about Brady’s return.

But that didn’t stop the reporter from then asking, “So there’s no [chance]?”

And at that point it was clear Belichick had reached his breaking point, where he shook his head and you could audibly hear him mutter, “Jesus Christ.”

That last quote didn’t make its way into the team’s official transcript, but hearing it was certainly a little humorous and it’s likely a preview, and hopefully a warning, of what’s to come if other reporters continue trying to pursue the matter.

From there the tide of the press conference turned to talking about rookie linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill, with he coach launching a near 200 word response as the subject finally came to a close.

Unfortunately, it probably won’t be the last time, and expect it to get even worse should Garoppolo pull off a strong start to the regular season.
