Tuesday Daily Patriots Rundown 4/19: Mayo Honors Bombing Victim

🕑 Read Time: 3 minutes

It’s on to Tuesday and the vision of players getting ready for the season suddenly makes the season feel a little closer.  Let the countdown begin, and here’s this morning’s rundown:

Back in action – All indications from day one at Gillette Stadium point to a good turnout, with a host of players on hand for the team’s first voluntary workout session held at the stadium.

Patriots.com posted photos from the day as players returned to work, and the players were spotted together putting themselves through drills and starting the ever-important team-building process that will hopefully build the necessary bonds to carry them through the emotional rigors that accompany a 16 game schedule.

It was great to see, although it’s just the first step in the process.  There will still be a host of rookies brought in over the next couple of weeks between the draft and the subsequent undrafted free agents, which will obviously affect the dynamic heading into training camp.  Not to mention the next round of cutdowns around the league that could see the Patriots making moves of their own to accommodate someone else’s discarded player.

Seeing Tom Brady’s signature knit hat and pom-pom is a reminder that football is coming and it’s already underway.  But images like these are like the first scent of grass that reminds us that it won’t be long before it all begins again and thanks to workouts like these, the Patriots will likely be working hard to try and get back to playing at a championship level.

Mayo Honors Marathan Bombing Victims on Instagram – Recently-retired linebacker Jerod Mayo took to Instagram on Monday to honor Mark Bauman, who Mayo said he was blessed to be in his presence.   Bauman, who lost his legs in the marathon bombing, like many of the other victims, remains strong and it’s something that got the attention of the former Patriot.

Film crews were on hand for Monday’s marathon while preparing for the new movie “Stronger”, which will be eventually hitting theaters and telling the story of what many people went through during that horrific event.

“My wife and I were blessed with the presence of a real life hero yesterday,” Mayo said via his official Instagram account.  “He has such a moving story that we feel everyone needs to read.   BMC hosted another amazing event to celebrate the #marathonmonday runners and the other heroes (All the survivors).”

“Mayor Marty Walsh, Ted English, Lions Gate, Jake Gyllenhaal and a host of other amazing people were in attendance. I had the pleasure of hosting the night.  We would like to thank John Hancock and Santander for sponsoring such an amazing and historical event in our city. We would also like to congratulate all of the runners… You guys are the real MVPs. We can’t wait until the movie “Stronger” is in theaters so the world can see what #bostonstrong is all about.”

Brady Also Shows His Support – Mayo wasn’t the only player showing his support, as Tom Brady did the same for survivor Adrianne Haslet-Davis, who made her first attempt to run the 26.2-mile course during the Marathon on Monday.

Brady showed his support for her on Facebook:

Chris Jones Lands in Miami – After being waived by New England it appears Jones, if he does his part and earns a roster spot, could be lining up against his former team this season.

The former Patriot was claimed by the Dolphins on Tuesday, setting him up for a season playing for the Dolphins against his former club, who opted to part ways with him on Monday.

Jones is in the final year of his rookie contract and is owed $1.7 million this year, which he’ll receive in the event he makes their roster. His contract is also not guaranteed, which makes this a no-risk move for the Dolphins, who were able to add a player that is arguably pretty good.

The Patriots may have been hoping to bring Jones back at a lower salary but he obviously showed enough on film to impress the Dolphins into giving him a shot.  He was a good player and a hard-working guy.  Hopefully, for his sake, he’ll go on to have a pretty good year on days that don’t involve battling his former club.
