For the past 13 seasons, Safety Devin McCourty has developed into a cornerstone player in the New England Patriots backfield.
In that span, the first-round draft selection out of Rutgers has been a part of five trips to the Super Bowl, three championships, two Pro Bowl selections, and an all-but-guaranteed spot in the Patriots Hall of Fame.
As the matchup with the Buffalo Bills approaches, McCourty will hit another major career milestone, 200 games played.
During his press conference Monday, McCourty was surprised by teammate Matthew Slater and owner Robert Kraft as he gifted a photo collage featuring 199 images from his career.
“We don’t usually give personal lauding to anyone,” Kraft said at the podium. “But special achievements made by special people deserve special recognition.”
Kraft also presented a video tribute featuring his family alongside current and former teammates.
McCourty will become the 90th player in league history to achieve the 200-game milestone and just the 24th with a single franchise.
Additionally, McCourty has the unique distinction of starting every game he has played in the NFL and is third in franchise history in total starts and sixth in games played.
“I’m just enjoying it, man,” McCourty said after the presentation. “I did not expect that at all. I came in here as a young pup, and accomplishments didn’t matter — individual accomplishments. But it’s been a heck of a journey. I’m enjoying every moment of it, and a lesson I learned from my brother, from (former Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty), is just enjoy the moment. Don’t think of anything else but stay present and be in the moment.
“I think what would be cool for the 200th game would be a win, so that’ll be the focus.”
Zack Cox of NESN shared a close-up of the photo collage as his brother Jason shared his reaction over Twitter.
