Resetting the Patriots team record book
With five weeks to go until training camp opens and almost twelve weeks until the Pats kickoff the season against the Bills, here is something to help pass the time: an updated look at who stands where on the all-time leader board for the New England Patriots.
New England Patriots
The Patriots enter the 2013 season with 426 regular season wins, which is tied with the Minnesota Vikings for 15th most in NFL history. Twelve of the franchises with more victories were playing long before the Pats were in existence; among the twenty teams that came to be in 1960 or later the Patriots rank 3rd in wins, and can move up the last past the Vikings and the Raiders (430) this season - which would make them the winningest team that originated in the old AFL.
In club history the Pats have a .536 winning percentage, which ranks them 11th all time; they could move up past the Browns (.540), Raiders (.542) and Vikings (.545) this year.
The Pats have had twenty season in which they made the playoffs, which ranks 16th in NFL history. Of the old AFL teams only the Raiders (21), Titans (21) and Dolphins (22) have more.
If the Patriots win the AFC that would give them eight conference championships; that would tie Dallas and Pittsburgh for the most conference champions in the Super Bowl era.
Should the Patriots win the Super Bowl that would give them four Lombardi trophies, which would be the fourth most in NFL history.
Bill Belichick
BB has 187 wins in the NFL, which is the most of any active coach and 9th all time. He should have no trouble moving past Dan Reeves (190) and Chuck Noll (193) this year, although catching Marty Shottenheimer (200) might have to wait until next year.
Belichick is a 6th-best 86 games over .500 as a head coach; he should surpass Tom Landry (+88) this year.
The Hoodie is currently tied with Tony Dungy and Chuck Knox for an 8th-best 11 years in the playoffs; he can move into a tie for 5th with Bud Grant, Mike Holmgren and Chuck Noll with another playoff appearance.
His 18 playoff wins ranks third best all time; three more will give him the NFL record. Don Shula (19) and Tom Landry (20) are the only head coaches with more post season victories.
One more conference championship would give Belichick six, which would tie him with Shula for the most in NFL history.
One more Super Bowl victory would tie Belichick with Chuck Noll for the most in league history.
A 4th championship would be one more than the total by Bill Walsh, Joe Gibbs and Weeb Ewbank, and put Belichick into a 5th place tie for the most ever with Guy Chamberlain and Chuck Noll.
Tom Brady
Since TB12 already owns every meaningful team passing record, let us look strictly at his career rankings in the NFL record books.
334 passing touchdowns (5th): needs nine to move past Tarkenton to 4th place all time.
37 game winning drives (5th, tied with Warren Moon): currently 8 behind Brett Favre and 9 in back of John Elway.
22 playoff games started (6th, tied with Charlie Waters and Jack Reynolds): right now Tom is one game behind Joe Montana and Larry Cole, and two in back of Gene Upshaw and Brett Favre.
3,798 passes completed (8th): Brady needs 326 completions to move past John Elway into 5th place all time; that should happen in early December.
44,806 yards passing (9th): the Pats QB should pass Vinny Testaverde week two at home against the Jets, and then pass Frank Tarkenton sometime mid season; he needs 4,520 yards to move past Warren Moon into sixth place.
26 fourth-quarter comebacks (9th, tied with Warren Moon): four more would move him in to 5th place all time.
Stephen Gostkowski
The Ghost now ranks third in club history with 170 field goals; he is just six FG behind Gino Cappelletti. Gostkowski now has 202 FG attempts, having passed John Smith (191) last year. Gostkowski now has 356 extra points, just 18 behind franchise leader Adam Vinatieri.
Rob Gronkowski
- 234 points (17th); 68 points would tie Gronk with Randy Moss and Ben Coates for 7th most in team history.
- 39 touchdowns (10th, tied with Jim Coloclough and Corey Dillon); 10 touchdowns would tie him with Jim Nance for 4th place, just one score behind Randy Moss and Ben Coates.
- 38 receiving touchdowns (6th, tied with Irving Fryar); his next touchdown catch ties him with Jim Colclough, and four more matches Gino Cappelletti's total for 4th place.
- 2663 receiving yards (19th); 500 yards puts Gronk in 12th place all time, ahead of Harold Jackson.
- 187 receptions (19th); 30 catches ties him with Vincent Brisby for 13th on the club's all time leader board.
Aaron Hernandez
- 18 receiving touchdowns (17th, tied with Harold Jackson); needs 3 TD to pass Ben Watson and Art Graham, while ten TD would tie AHern with Russ Francis for the 10th most in franchise history.
- 1,956 receiving yards (27th); 748 yards would put Hernandez past Cedric Jones in to 18th place
- 175 receptions (23rd); an 84-catch season would tie Hernandez with Randy Moss for 12th most in club history.
Stevan Ridley
- 1704 rushing yards (19th); 766 yards would move Ridley past Andy Johnson, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Steve Grogan, Carl Garrett, Mosi Tatupu, Laurence Maroney, Leonard Russell and Craig James for an all time ranking of 11th in Pats history.
- 377 rushing attempts (21st); 160 carries would tie Ridley with Garrett as 15th best in club history.
- 13 rushing touchdowns (19th, tied with Andy Johnson and Leonard Russell); 5 rushing touchdowns would tie 11th-place Mosi Tatupu, and eight would put Ridley in a 9th-place tie with Antowain Smith and Laurence Maroney.
- 78 points (60th, tied with Craig James, Leonard Russell and Ron Sellers); four touchdowns would make Ridley the 47th player to score more than 100 points with the patriots and push him past Mack Herron and Darryl Stingley on the all time franchise scoring list.
Julian Edelman
- 69 receptions (58th); Edelperson needs 31 catches to become the 46th player in club history to have 100 as a Patriot; as a rookie in 2009 he had 37.
- 714 receiving yards (61st); with 286 yards Edelman would move past Danny Woodhead and become the 45th player with 1000 receiving yards with the Pats
- 72 punt returns (9th); equaling his career high of 28 punt returns (2011) would give him 100 his career, which would be 7th all time and one behind Kevin Faulk
- 947 punt return yards (7th); Edelman is currently 238 yards behind 4th-ranked Wes Welker

Wes Welker
Welker finishes his six years in New England with the following career records:

- Ranks 1st in receptions per game (7.2), a full 2.2 yards more than anyone else (Randy Moss, 5.0)
- Has the most receiving yards per game (80.2), over five yards ahead of 2nd place Randy Moss
- Caught the longest touchdown reception in club history (99 yards)
- Ranks 2nd in receiving yards (7,459), behind only Stanley Morgan
- Is 3rd in all purpose yardage (9,070), trailing only Kevin Faulk and Troy Brown
- 4th in punt return yardage (1,185), behind only Brown, Irving Fryar and Dave Meggett
- Ranks 4th in punts returned (114), behind only Brown, Fryar and Meggett
- Has the 7th longest punt return (69 yards)
- Is 8th in receiving touchdowns (37)
- 13th in touchdowns (37), tied with Curtis Martin
- 19th in points scored (225), which is 14th among positional players
- Welker is not only the franchise single-season leader in receptions with 123 in 2009, he also holds the five highest single-season marks for catches.
- Most yards in a single season (1,569 in 2011), and five of the top 11 single-season yardage totals.
- Most yards per game in a season (98.1 in 2011), and three of the top five years in that category.
In the NFL record book Welker ranks 29th in receptions (768, one more than Marshall Faulk) and is 67th in receiving yards with 8,580. The 123 receptions is 2nd most ever in a single season, and he has three of the top ten single seasons for receptions in NFL history as well as five of the top 25 ever in that category.
Deion Branch
- 144 points scored, tied with Randy Vataha for 28th in franchise history (22nd among non-kickers)
- 24 touchdowns, tied with Vataha and Antowain Smith for 21st in club history
- 8th in receptions (328)
- 9th in receiving yards (4,297)
- 12th in receiving touchdowns (24)
- 12th in receiving yards per game (48.3)
- 78 receptions in 2005 was the 10th most in team history at that time (20th most now)
- 998 receiving yards in 2005 was 10th most in team history at that time (ranks 19th now)
In the NFL record book Branch ranks 106th with 518 career receptions (just ahead of Al Toon and behind Bobby Mitchell), and 134th with 6,644 career receiving yards, which is just in back of Cris Collinsworth.
Danny Woodhead
- 24th in career rushing touchdowns (10, one behind Craig James and two behind Sammy Morris)
- 25th in career rushing yardage (1,199, just in front of Vagas Ferguson and in back of Bob Perryman)
- 31st in rushing attempts (250)
- 44th in total touchdowns scored (14, tied with Tom Brady, Vincent Brisby, Shawn Jefferson, Billy Lott and Derrick Ramsey)
- 45th in career receiving yardage (982, just ahead of Tony Simmons and behind Jabar Gaffney)
- Woodhead's single season high for rushing yards was 547 in 2010, which ranks 60th in Pats history

- The 74 receptions ties Lloyd with Bob Windsor at 56th on the club's career leader board
