Default OT: NFL Films - Mike Vanderjagt

It's on NFLN right now ...I never thought i'd be interested in the story of a kicker. Pretty cool show though.

If you don't know who he is, he was the Colts kicker who dissed Peyton and Dungy after losing 41-0 in the playoffs, and Peyton responded with the comment "Our idiot kicker got liquored up and went and ran his mouth".

How could we forget Vanderjerk, Rodney Harrison's favorite opponent? Since I didn't get to see the show, what was so cool about it?

True story - the year Rodney called him Vanderjerk we had played them in the opening game, I think, and Vanderjerk shanked a gimme figgie as time expired and the Colts lost to us in Foxborough. Fast foward to the end of the season. The Pats were eliminated in the playoffs in Denver the day before. My hubby and I, in trying to guess where the Pats would end up in the playoffs had guessed wrong, and were in Indy, watching Colts vs. Steelers. Despite our pain over the Pats loss we actually had fun (wore Steelers hats for the only time in my life because we wer PO'd about a mamby pamby article in the paper BEGGING Indy fans to go to the game and wear blue) and were sitting amongst a bunch of Steeler fans. At the end of the game Bettis fumbles and Indy runs it back and almost gets a TD, but instead Vanderjerk has to line up for a gimme figgie to win it.

I thought the Steeler fan in front of us was going to have a heart attack right in the stands. His face was bright red and he kept saying to me, "you don't understand, this always happens to us." I told him not to worry, that Vanderjerk would shank the kick and blow it because he did the same thing against the Pats earlier in the year (not really believing it, of course). Lo and behold, Vanderjerk shanks the kick and blows it. Then I thought the guy was going to have a heart attack because he kept shaking me and screaming at the top of his lungs, "YOU CALLED IT! YOU CALLED IT!" LOL. The only time I have been on the same side as Steeler fans. And of course, in the off season, Indy stole AV from us to cure their Vanderjerk problem.

It was basically just him recapping his career, setting the 42straight FG record, the "fight" between him and Peyton that the media exploded, kind of like TB and BOB.

The guy just seemed pretty humble, he's coaching a highschool football team now and still kicking 55+ yard FG's at age 41.

It wasn't show much "cool", just "interesting". One of those things where the only thing you really remember him for was the comments between him and #18 and then find out a lot more about who he actually was? I dunno how to describe it, it was just another well done documentary from NFL Films.

My brain's trying to reconcile the massive Schadenfreude you must have felt being present in Indy for such a devastating loss, with the fact that you made a Steeler fan happy — and, well I'm going to have to have a drink before my body shuts down over it all.

Seriously, kudos to you for taking that sort of gamble on the Pats. Great fan story.

It was weird. On the morning of the game we were so upset (over the Pats) we thought about not going, but we already had our tickets and were in Indy. Then we were mad over that article in the paper. We had left a sports bar the night before at half time because the Pats were playing so badly (and that was the worst-officiated game in my life time I think) and frankly people were being mean to us (LOL, the only people with Pats jerseys on in a sea of Colts and Steelers jerseys). I sat in my hotel room in despair as the Pats game wound down. Once we got to the Colts stadium, though, the thrill of visiting another stadium, watching a playoff game, and having no stake in the outcome kind of took over. When Steelers fans found out we were really Pats fans in disguise they thanked us for supporting their team and said they wished the Pats had won rather than Denver (if only to have the chance to knock us out the next week of course). Kind of surreal.

I think your timeline may be off. The season that the Vanderjerk shanked the FG on opening game was 2004, which of course was the last yr the Pats won the SB. Rodney was calling him "Vanderjerk" leading up to the AFCDG.

In the 2005 regular season the Colts destroyed the Pats here when they were so banged up in the secondary.

Anyway, good story!
