Default Fines in the preseason

Is the league going to give out any fines in the preseason? The helmet to helmet hit on Christian Cox won't get any air time, but it certainly was an illegal and would of been fined during the regular season last year. Even the hit on Taylor Price was pretty bad.

Is this a sign of the league being more lax this year with fines or more to the point that it's just a bunch of 3rd stringers out there and no one got seriously hurt?

It's an excellent question; my guess is no.

I would think the NFLPA may have an issue with players being fined for actions in games that those players are not being paid for.

If this is indeed the case, as it appears to be, then it opens the door for conspiracy theories about these four games being potential open season for vengeful players and teams.

Suspensions would be the other option...

Suspension from the next preseason game? That's like no penalty at all.

If you mean suspension from a regular season game then the NFLPA would have an even bigger issue, as that would in most cases represent an even larger amount of money.

I just don't see how you could get away with fining somebody more than what they are earning; keep in mind there's no guarantee that they will make the 53-man roster and ever see any money from their contract other than a signing bonus, if they had one.

If there are no sanctions to such illegal hits in preseason, it would be like giving teams a green light to go headhunting. Star players would undoubtedly be targetted.

I guess I'm going on the presumption that most of the guys that would be involved in these type of hits in the preseason are fighting for roster spots. I would think that being suspended for a preseason game or two would be a pretty big deterrent in this case.

Here's a thought: fines are typically not paid in the usual sense, i.e., a player writing a check to the league; that money is removed as a deduction from a player's paycheck. So if a player is assessed a fine during a preseason game then it would probably come out of his week one paycheck. If he gets cut and doesn't make the roster of any NFL team, the NFL does not pursue it.

As for teams having a green light to go after a star player, they probably would avoid this tactic since the opposing team could easily turn around and do the same thing to them. The downside to a team taking out an opposing player would far outweigh whatever benefit they may have in doing so to another team that is outside their division or conference.

Although it's not much, it's not "nothing".

Vets get $1,225 a week and rookies receive $800 a week.

They do fine in the preseason and Suh's hit on a helmetless QB may warrant a FedEx letter from the league office....

Might as well be nothing. That's like a dinner date for Gisom Bradchen.
