I'm just seeing all this now but was doing jumping jacks when I heard that the salary cap hit of the guarantee was $5 million a season. If people think that's an outrageous amount I must be missing something. I'm far less concerned about any "fake" numbers that make him the "highest paid" in the NFL

You're correct that this is what they will key on for Brady negotiations (presumably next year - in a potential uncapped year, at least for the first year which might change the dynamic and structure that much more)

So while as an extension a year early reduces the value I'm sure the Pats will make note of the fact that Eli is younger etc too...

I expect Brady's gurantee to exceed this - but that's not the least bit surprising.

This news could have been far worse (though I would have preferred to see Brady's contract agreement happen next season BEFORE Manning's and Rivers')

Like any other franchise qb contract it will be reworked 3 times before its up for the cap. Why do we care?

Not that I'm an Eli or Giant fan by any stretch, but it's 98 TD's and 74 INT's. You got the rating right and yes, he's overpaid and overrated.

In 2004 Peyton signed his contract. For the most part this board said that the contract would lead the Colts to cap hell. In 2006 the Colts won the Super Bowl. In 2008 Big Ben signed his extension. In 2008 the Steelers won the Super Bowl. In 2009 Eli signed his extension and without knowing the details of the contract some people are already claiming that the contract will adversely impact the Giants.

If there is no cap in 2010/2011/2012/2013/2014/2015/2016, how can the contract hurt the Giants??
What do people expect the cap to be 3 to 4 years from now??

I heard on the radio this morning that ShEli is actually still the second-highest paid player behind Carson Palmer. How does Palmer get to be the highest paid player in the league when his team is owned by Mike Brown???

Palmer's deal which was really a cap driven restructure and extension late in 2005 is worth $118.75M TOTAL. But he got there by adding 6 years to the 3 still remaining on his rookie deal FOR A TOTAL of $118.75M over 9 years through 2014. That's a little more than $13M per if he plays out the entire 9 years. He got $15M as a signing bonus on the extension and a $9M option bonus in year 3.

Eli is getting $106.9M over the next 7 years averaging $15.27M per. And $35M of it is guaranteed. The extension alone minus the remaining year and his average would be $16M.

I guess they can afford it with all the money they saved on Burress.

While stat-wise he doesn't deserve to be the highest paid player in the league, the Giants are banking on him stepping up his game and proving to the team that it's not the WRs making Eli look good, but Eli making the WRs look good. The Giants are going all in on this one

The details of Eli's deal with the Giants are now filtering out. He will "see" $48M over the first 3 seasons which is the gold standard measure of a contract. He gets a $13M signing bonus this season and a $12.5M option bonus in 2010 which when added to his first three years salaries (apparently all or most of which are guaranteed) totals $48M between 2009-2011. He had one year left on his rookie deal (at a relatively high salary I believe ergo his cap has actually decreased for this year with the new deal although it will meet or exceed his $16M AAV from 2010 on out).

But as astounding as that may sound to mediots on it's face, particularly given it's Eli..., it's not much more than what Peyton got back in 2004 when he was due to be a UFA. His deal included $35M up front in signing bonus and salary, a paltry second year salary and another $10M in roster bonus and salary in year 3 for a $45M+ first three year take. His AAV was $14M, although under the old cap rules Polian was able to manage it in to hit the cap in the single digits for the first for the first four and it's in the $18-21M range in the last three as a result.

Brady's first 3 year take on his 2005 extension (that had two years remaining) was $37M. His entire deal (6/$60M) averaged $10M and would have had closer to flat cap hits as originally structured had they not restructured it for some cap room over the last few seasons.
