Default Steve Sabol says Holmes catch is best in NFL History

Didn't think the catch was THAT great but according of Steve Sabol who produces those NFL Films, He says that the catch in the endzone by Holmes was the greatest catch in NFL History

His reason for saying this was the fact that it was the catch that decided the Super Bowl champion while it was also a difficult catch in between 3 defenders and the perfect balance it took to keep the ball in control and both feet inbounds - For these reasons, he claims it was the best ever considering the situation and what it meant

I still think that Moss's catch for a TD in 2007 against the Dolphins between 2 defenders and of which was a long bomb from Brady was the best I have ever seen but Sabol thinks otherwise

More hyperbole being spewed directly after the game. My, how quickly they forget that catch from a year ago (maybe this is for the better, then?)

Holmes' catch was extraordinary, but the throw was the best part of that play. It wasn't even the best catch of the quarter (how Fitzgerald held onto that fade is beyond me...).

If you think about it, which catches were better and had a bigger impact? Only one I can think of is Tyree, but honestly speaking that catch was a pure fluke and it was caught by a guy who I'm not even sure is still in the league right now. Holmes' catch was a thing of beauty and it basically won a Super Bowl for Pittsburgh. Sure some catches were better but if it happened in the regular season nobody really cares.

This is the way I see it. I could maybe extend fully and catch that pass (with the glue like gloves these guys wear). I might not have the awarness to get my feet in like that but I was never a WR. The more I watch that replay it was the throw that amazes me. Big Ben is looking at three DB's all within 3 yards of Holmes and he throws a 20 yard rocket just overtop of them in a place where only Holmes could catch it. I doubt any QB would have tried that throw and to compleat it over three defenders was sick. What is even better is Holmes just let a TD go through his hands on the play previous which I though was going to be a TD but I guess they saved their best for last.

IMO the throw was way better then catch.

The Steeler's already have the best catch in divisional playoff history.....Franco Harris via Bradshaw - Fuqua and also Jack Tatum. If you are a Raiders fan then it hit Jack Tatum in the shoulder and Pittsburgh has to hand over a Lombardi!!

What Sabol actually claimed was that it was the greatest *game-winning TD catch* in NFL history. A little soon to rank these things - let's see if it acquires the same timeless quality of the Immaculate Reception, or The Catch by Dwight Clark.

You're right the throw by Ben was as good if not better than the catch itself.

One correction on the Immaculate reception, though - the steelers did not win a Lombardi that year, they actually lost the following week in the AFCCG - but that game against the Raiders is considered the trigger for their 70's dynasty.

As long as it overshadows the fluke catch by Tyree, then I'm all for the "experts" claiming Holmes catch as the best ever.

I'd say the Holmes catch itself was significantly more difficult than Clark's. Clark didn't have to contort his body to stay inbounds. Also, as mentioned, the stakes were higher with Holmes.

Actually, SF's season over if Montana/Clark don't make that play in NFC Championship Game. Holmes catch was on 2nd down. Even if they don't convert 3rd down, FG would send game to OT. Not exactly life/death. I agree about the Holmes catching being better though. Historically, the Clark catch may have been the bigger one though. Started SF's great run. Basically, ended Dallas run. Though Dallas did get to NFC Champ. Game in 82 strike season.
They were never the same after that SF game.

Time will tell if it becomes as immortalized and remembered as 'The Catch' by Dwight Clark, but I doubt Holmes' catch will be as well remembred down the road. In my opinion it will end up being a #2 or #3 game-winning catch, even though it is the most recent - much like baseball's more recent home run by Joe Carter falling behind Bill Mazeroski's HR, which pales in the minds of fans to Bobby Thompson's HR.

I have no problem with anyone ranking that catch #1. I hate the STEALers as much as anyone...but that grab was amazing under those circumstances.
