Re: Rex Ryan HC of NYJ
Ryan is a terrific defensive mind and was a great DC, with a much better track record than Mangini. Whether or not he turns out to be a good HC remains to be seen. Dick LeBeau is probably the best DC since Belichick, and he was a lousy HC with the Bengals.
Even if Ryan turns out to be a good HC, the Jets are a dysfunctional organization. Dysfunctional in the sense that they have not been able to maintain a consistent system or set of values, and in the sense that the owner and GM have made moves independent of the coaching staff (such as trading for Favre). Those are generally not the hallmark of top franchises. Franchises which maintain a consistent system and set of values and stick to it from the top down, and let good football people make the decisions - such as the Pats, Steelers, Colts, Chargers, and NY Giants - tend to be more successful in the long run. Ryan could turn out to be brilliant and still be sabotaged by Woody and Tannenbaum.
