Default Media Can't Make Up Its Mind About Brett Favre

On ESPN all day yesterday, they were analyzing Green Bay's decision to let Favre go and to go with Aaron Rodgers, and most of the analysts said it hurt the Packers short term but will help them long term. Um...what!?

Aaron Rodgers threw 25 TD's, 13 ints. Brett Favre has thrown the most int's of anyone in the league this year at 19 int's to 21 TD's.

What is even most confusing is that these same people on ESPN were saying that Chad Pennington was a potential MVP and robbed of the pro bowl because of his amazing season resurrecting a 1-15 Dolphins team. ESPN looked at the Jets and said they would have been better off keeping Pennington. Pennington by the way threw for 17 TD's and 7 ints.

Bottom line, no surprise, ESPN is moronic and makes no sense on its commentary between Favre-Rodgers and Favre-Pennington, and the love fest of Brett Favre is ridiculous. I still can't believe Brett Favre made the Pro Bowl.

Let's see..... Jets are improved, Dolphins are improved....

Packers are in the hopper.

The real answer is that the trade benefited both the Jets and Dolphins (due to the ramifications) in the short run while hurting the Packers. As many people who've played competitive sports can attest, the impact of players, especially of good/great players, is usually more than just what the number show.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, although it's a couple of weeks old:

WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL

Quote:
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has had six chances to lead the Packers to a comeback win in the fourth quarter this season, but the team has yet to finish such an effort.
The Packers are going to have suffered a steeper decline following the departure of Favre than the Patriots will have suffered following the loss of Brady.

It is no surprise that the media cannot make sense of the fact that Favre is a mediocre QB this year.

The Packers would have about the same record this year with Favre at QB because anyone who watched the Packers' games knows that it was the defense and running game that killed their season, not their passing game. The Packers are 22nd in the league in points allowed with 23.9 PPG. Last year they were 7th with 18.2 PPG. Conversely, they are fifth in the league this year with points scored at 25.9 PPG. Last year, they were second with 27.9 PPG. So the Packers are scoring 2 points less per game, but giving up 5.7 points more per game. The blame lies more at the feet of the Packers' defense than the offense.

The Packers made the right move. As we see with the Jets, Favre isn't anything special anymore. He is capable of a handful of All Pro type of games, but he can be a liability in even more games as we have seen this year. His few great games do not make up for his mistakes though. That is the reality of an aged gunslinger who cannot keep the zip on his ball all season long and still makes poor decision when under pressure.

Well, I hope he goes back on the painkillers this week and steps things up, because we need him on Sunday.

I long ago stopped thinking about ESPN's view of Favre because it's a fool's errand to do so. It's so convoluted and skewed that it defies analysis. They are simply incapable of looking at him with any type of objectivity

Favre is probably finally all washed up, so, in hindsight, the Packers made the right decision. Rodgers, though, has been kind of Jekyll and Hyde this year. In the first three quarters or so, he's been just fine, but for some reason, he folds late in games. They had a stat on MNF, like his QB rating was 26.4 or so in the last four minutes in games. On another show, I heard he's had the ball 6 or 7 times with a chance to tie or win the game and the Pack lost all of those games. He had zero fourth quarter comeback wins this year. I hope he gets over this, whatever it is, because I like the guy (like Cal people too). Come on Aaron, show the 49ers they for sure should have picked you instead of Alex Smith.

Packers might be 4-11 right now if they kept Lord Favre.

Unless Favre plays Nose Tackle or Inside Line Backer, I doubt he was the cure for what ailed Green Bay this year.

Um, the 49ers could've picked Willy McGee from Southwest Alabama A&M State and he probably would've been a better pick than Alex Smith. Heck, a QB straight from Pop Warner could've done exactly what Smith has done. (That is, zip, zero, nothing)

Dude, Brett Favre can do anything. AND have fun doing it, just like a kid out there.
