+1

Favre: Top ranked for dumb luck.

Pennington: Top ranked for vengeance play under an infinitely superior coach.

Trent Edwards: Top ranked for worst bounce-back from a concussion.

Cassel: Top ranked for prepping to kick Favre in his wrinkly old nutsack.

I'm really tired of the "high school QB" moniker attached to Cassell-- that's a load of crap. He went to USC. He decided to stay and sat behind two Heisman trophy winners.

If he had gone to 100 other colleges, some of them very good football schools but without the huge depth of talent you see in a top 10 school, he would have likely been a solid starter for years.

If he had gone to a Cal, Utah, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Illinois, Pitt, North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Colorado, etc. etc. he would have played a lot and likely shown the abilities he showed in the workouts that got him drafted.

The scouts will find you if you hae talent, whether you are Flacco at Delaware or the backup at USC or Florida. Maybe the backup at USC or Florida would have beaten everyone else out for the job at Delaware. Maybe they would have beaten out the starters at UCLA or Florida State, for that matter.

The credibility of QB rating aside, it still deserves to be included. It uses all the stats in the first four rankings but applies a formula in a way which attempts to balance the factors. Also importantly, it also takes into account the number of attempts, which the previous four rankings do not.

So you can debate the formula used (and many have) but when looking at the raw stats, doesn't everyone implicitly apply their own mentally-calculated formula as to the the relative importance of the stats?

A much bigger issue with using statistical rankings to rank these QBs:

3 of the 4 QBs became their team's starter for the first time in either August or September. So Cassel/Favre/Pennington have all had to make major adjustments and all three have been "works in progress" much of this season. So looking at aggregate stats means less this year than it normally would.
