When the Patriots waived DL Kareem Brown last November to make room for WR Troy Brown on the 53-man roster, the team was favoring the present over the future.
Kareem Brown was a 2007 fourth-round draft choice out of the University of Miami who showed potential to join the team's already deep defensive line rotation. Meanwhile, Troy Brown was in his final year with the team, and the Patriots were already deep at receiver.
The Jets claimed Kareem Brown on waivers at the time, which added another layer of scrutiny to the Patriots' decision.
Often times, when those decisions are made, they are seldom revisited unless the player goes on to big things.
In this case, looking at it one year later, the Patriots' personnel evaluation seemed to be correct (other than drafting Brown in the first place, of course).
Kareem Brown, who had yet to emerge with the Jets, was waived yesterday.

Re: Kareem Brown waived by Jets-(Pats drafted him in the 4th round)
What a strange, strange draft 2007 was. On balance you'd have to rate it as tremendously productive, contributing 4 starters to the current lineup (Meriweather, Mayo, Moss & Welker). Yet Brown is just one of several pure whiffs, which don't happen often around here.

I agree. That was a weird draft. It happens.

Yeah, people look at it as a bust because the only two players actually drafted in that draft who are still with the team are Meriweather and Mike Richardson, but the Pats turned a lot of those picks into gold in other ways and most of the players actually drafted were longshot to make the roster anyway since six of the nine picks were sixth and seventh rounders. Even on bad teams, sixth and seventh round picks are far from guaranteed to make the final 53 man roster. When you have six of those guys, the odds diminish exponentially.
Seriously though. Would you rather have Mayo, Moss, and Welker than the the players they probably would have picked up in the rounds that the Pats had to give up picks to get these guys?

Boy do I feel like a Briz or a Wendel because back then I was wicked pissed that BB cut K Brown to keep over the hill Troy Brown on the roster. I thought BB was being too nostalgic and not providing for the future. I guess my career as an NFL talent evaluator dies stillborn.

And the draft pick for Mayo was there because of moves the year before. Remember, the Patriots lost their pick.
