McCluster is around 5'8"-5'9" and 170#, based both on his NFL.com profile and his NFLdraftscout pre-draft listing. He had 4.4 speed. He was taken #36 overall by the Chiefs in 2010. Another 2nd round guy who comes to mind is Randall Cobb, who is slightly bigger at 5'10" 190#, also with 4.4 speed. Demps is rawer than both but has better speed and pure physical ability. It will be interesting to see how he develops.

It's pure Speculation, of course, as any Projections would've steeply discounted his Value, because he'd made it clear that he was focused on the Olympics, with no particular plans to play any more FootBall.

But if he wasn't an Olympian??

Solid 2nd Rounder, if you ask me: Raw or not, that Speed is intoxicating.

And that, Ladies and Laddies, when all 32 teams showed interest ~ and rightfully so!! ~ is why I am utterly astonished that Bill The Mad (Genius) was able ~ with pure Straight Talk ~ to pull this off!!

You make some interesting points, as usual. Demps was projected by most to be a mid-late rounder, probably going in the 3rd-5th range. But ...

1. 32 teams showed interest in Dempts after the Olympics. Interest probably would have been greater if he had gone through the Combine and Pro Day workouts. Competition drives the bidding price up.

2. Speed drives interest. Consider Darius Heyward-Bey (#7 overall in 2009). Jacoby Ford went from a late round pick to the 4th round based on his blazing speed. Stephen Hill went from a mid round pick to a top 50 pick. It's hard to tell what Demps putting up a 4.2 40 would have done to his draft stock, especially if he had worked out with RBs or receivers at the Combine and showed any aptitude.

3. Ryan Broyles was projected as a mid- to late-round pick coming off his ACL injury, but was picked #54 overall in the 2nd round by Detroit to be an all-purpose weapon.

No one will ever know where Demps would have been drafted, but I think it's reasonable to assume that he probably would have gone higher than projected. As we've seen so often in recent years - the Josh Gordon situation being the latest example - teams are willing to reach when they have a need. If Demps had been eligible to enter the Supplemental Draft and had worked out, how high would he have gone? I'm guessing 3rd round at least. So the way I look at it, the Pats got a high supplemental draft pick without having to give up a pick from 2013.

Back in January I had us taking him in the fourth round and that was right before he announced he was focusing on the Olympics. Though, an impressive combine, and he would have had one, would have had a great effect on his draft stock.

That sounds about right as a projection. That's where Jacoby Ford went in 2010. 3rd round would not have been a huge shock - guys like Brandon Hardin made the late-round to 3rd round jump pretty easily based on athleticism and upside. 2nd round would have been a stretch, but by no means out of the question. Teams take whoever they want. Just ask Tavon Wilson.

Thank for that. Research i had was he was a 3rd/4th rounder who had the potential to do a Poe/Gholston/Hill when he hit the combine. I personally agree that a 4.2 something in the 40 and the guy is going mid 2nd-early 3rd just because someone is going to take a bet on a guy and hope they can turn him into another CJ2K, open the hole and let the guy run to daylight.

Great pick up by the pats i like some others have mentioned am treating it like we had another high 3rd that we used to take a chance on a guy with rediculous athletic ability.

Here's hopeing he makes the team and contributes some explosive plays.

Reading this thread made me think of an old rock and roll lyric from the 70's or 80's that sums up the Demps transaction. (which is something given I often find myself standing in front of the fridge trying to remember what it was I got up for )
