Default With Rookie Wage Scale, does Belichick trade up, down or stay put?

Couple of things I took from tonight's NFLN Patriots segment:

1. SMY was on and she said that she heard from credible sources that the patriots plan to trade out of the 31st pick especially to teams who want to come back into the first round to select Brandon Weedon.

in other words BB knows some teams may be desperate for a QB (like Denver was a few years ago with Tebow) and he can try to fleece them.

2. Charlie Casserly mentioned the possibility of the patriots using the 27th pick to select a guard. I don't get this one, especially with connelly, cannon, mankins and gallery signed.

3. Lombardi states that he believes BB doesn't want to pay a rookie money that would result in him being one of the top 5 paid players on the team. that would cause some guys to be a bit jealous, etc.

Slight trade up or stay at 27, trade down at 31.

I will surprised if they do anything besides picking at 27 and trading down or out from 31. Same thing they did last year.

He mentioned the "possibility" in the "I guess it's possible because they did well with Mankins but I don't see them taking an OL" sense.

What you said was barely touching what he really said. He actually said the obvious - should be mostly defense and trades.

like I said, casserly said it was a possibility.as he focused on talking about picking defensive players, but the fact that he even mentioned a guard is puzzling. i mean it's also a "possibility" the patriots draft a qb or wr.

Sure, if you want to totally mislead the board of the context then you had it exactly right.

Note to self - never believe anything posted by TommyBrady12.

The definition of "possibility" isn't important, the intent of what Casserly said is what matters and he clearly doesn't think the Patriots will take a Guard even if it is a possibility. Hell, passing on the pick entirely is a possibility.

Here is a mock by Pro Football Weekly showing the "contract" price of the selection.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Nawrocki's contract-based mock draft

Although neither pick tops my list, both are on it, so I would not be very disappointed with either and the contract cost is not that great.

Let's stick to the subject without the popcorn throwing.

We do need interior OL for next year - that's what Casserly was probably alluding to in the context that if no one else is left when we pick then a guard could be a possibility (i.e. if the guard has a higher grade. BB will be to use the cliche 'true to his board.')

But with BB any position outside of QB can be a possibility in the first round.
