Default Carolina might be a possible trade partner

http://www.charlotte.com/panthers/story/582831.html

But the Panthers might never let Ryan drop to Baltimore if the Chiefs pass. One scenario Carolina is believed to be considering is making a bold trade up the draft ladder, perhaps to New England's No. 7 spot.

The Patriots are highly interested in trading down, according to reports.

I've been preaching this for a little while.. I can see bill belichick old from angelos from Chicago and Carolina moving up to the #7 spot.. This might give us an additional #2..

Apparently we are trading with every single team on the way down to pick # 17. And in the process we pick up 10 3rd round picks.... :P

Well this isn't exactly a rock solid source but I read this a few days ago from the football guy at realgm.com :

http://www.realgm.com/boards/footbal...=5455&start=12

"It would really help the Vikings if Carolina does what I believe they are going to and trade up to #7 to get Matt Ryan"

Now, I'll admit his mock is strange :

http://www.realgmfootball.com/src_fe...ft_version_61/

But the note about Carolina did get my attention - and it makes sense as they could put Ryan on ice for a year or two with Delhomme there.

2 interresting things. Was listening to 890 last night and Kevin Winter had Todd McShay on.

They both agreed, there's likely a trade with the Pats as long as there's a partner, we're just not going to see it coming til about pick 5 or 6.

However, mcShay raised the point that St. Louis is fielding calls like crazy for #2 AND the Patriots have called. McShay said if NE were to move up, they'd be shooting for Chris Long.

Another one, and this is crazy, let's sat Dorsey goes to ATL at 3, they discussed what happens if Matt Ryan is available at 7, who calls. McShay said it wouldn't surprise him if ATL called back and offered ALL 3 second RD picks 34, 37 and 48 to get back in and take Ryan. NE would also grab abother pick along the way. That is an interresting one, especially if BB isn't a fan of this year's crop with the exception of a player or 2.

Funny you say that....in my current mock I have the Patriots drafting at 17 (Groves) after trades with Cincinnati and then Minnesota.

I think McShay's way off-base. If the Pats trade up, I think they'd definitely be targeting Dorsey or Jake Long.

I've considered the Atlanta scenario, but I find it doubtful for a couple of reasons. Belichick probably would like to draft before #34 unless maybe he gets Atlanta's first rounder next year in the trade (which could be high enough for Maulauga). Secondly, Atlanta would have to have Ryan miles above every other quarterback. A rebuilding team needs those second rounders, and they can very likely have their pick of Brohm, Henne, or Flacco at #34.

If they Patriots were to trade up to number #2, I believe it would be to take Glenn Dorsey. I respect McShay's opinon alot, but both Peter King and Michel Holley, two people with good sources inside the Patriots organization both said the Patriots love Glenn Dorsey. I'd love to have Chris Long, but Dorsey is the player I think they would target. This kind of reminds me on 03 with all the talk for DeWayne Roberston and how the Patriots wanted to trade up and they never did, they just try to play the Jets. Maybe McShay has better info inside the Patriots, but in the end I trust Michael Holley sources then anyone else's when it comes to the Patriots.

DryHeat, I still don't see your fascination with Groves. Good player, but no way at #17. I read Mel Kiper said he'd be a 2nd round pick. I think the Patriots could select a lot better players then Groves.

First I like that trade, as far as getting into the second round with multiple picks, but that takes us completely out of the first round, and I dont think BB is going to do that.

He traded last years picks to get more picks this year. And CLEARLY the draft is ALOT deeper in 08 than it was in 07. I think BB Saw this draft coming. And did what he did because he likes what is available here.

NOW...

Theres sooo many possible trade partners!

Lets Realistically Say Ryan and Ellis are available at 7, and Baltimore(8) wants Ryan, Cincy(9) Wants Ellis?...whats to say we dont play teams against eachother. We are on the clock at 7...We call Carolina, they offer to swap firsts and cough up a third. We call baltimore and tell em...Carolina is gonna take matt...

So we move to 8th, and Ellis is on the Board. The saints Call..they want ellis...heres a third rounder with a pick swap in the first...We Call cincy...ect...

It sounds flawless on paper...but i believe BB will trade down until hes sitting somewhere in the 15 - 25 Range, and he will have picked up a couple mid 2 - mid 3rd round picks in the process....

There is some GREAT value there...
