Default Patriots 3 round mock

Round 1
Quentin Groves OLB. Pats add an explosive pass rusher to get to the QB, and relieve the pressure from the secondary.

(Patriots trade down with the Bears, they get the #14 pick and the Bear's second round pick.)

Round 2
Antoine Cason CB. Corner is a need. Cason is not a speed burner but he's fundamentally solid, and he's not a midget.

(Patriots trade up in the second round using the Bear's pick, and one of their extra thirds.)

Sam Baker OT. Pats shore up the right side of the offensive line.

Round 3
Jonathon Goff ILB. There are concerns about Goff's stiffness, but he showed athleticism at the combine, and he showed plenty of leadership and tackling ability at Vanderbilt. He also happens to have the ideal size for a Patriot linebacker.

Brad Cottam TE. BB sure loves his tight ends, and he adds another one here. Cottam is a huge inline blocker. At 6'7, 270 lbs, it's almost like having an extra tackle out in space.

Would be an absolutely ideal draft. Won't happen, but these are basically all the guys I want out of the draft.

Well I'm glad you liked it. I know, no draft turns out ideally. But if the Pats draft turned out close to this, I think I would be pleased.

That's actually a pretty good mock draft, I'd be happy with that. While everybody is talking about Long and Ghoulston, Groves is a sleeper and would love to get this guy if the Pats don't score Ghoulston. Every need is addressed.

That trade with the Bears isn't happening.

Why not?

1. It fits the trade value chart.

2. This ensures the Bears can draft Matt Ryan. Rex Grossman has been a monumental bust for them. He's holding them back, and they know it.

I don't think Matt Ryan gets past Atlanta now that they signed Turner at RB

And couldn't the Chiefs grab him at 5? Is that impossible?

I'd love for Ryan to be there at #7 but there are three teams that I don't see him slipping past. And there are going to be teams ahead of us that would like to trade back as well if they could.

I like it if Gholston isnt there. There is never a substitute for the best pass rusher available. Not sure if Cason will be there, or if the trade is worth it as you are likely to get Terrell where you are in the 2nd--they are projecting 10 CBs in the first 2 rounds. Because if you do that trade you lose either Cottam or Goff(who I dont think will go til 4-5th rd).
Same trade, we trade up to get Albert (OL VA) in the 2nd and use our hi 3rd on the cb.....I am not completely sold on Cottam because he is injury prone and not known as a blocker....and NO, thats not something you can teach a guy as a pro.

It's possible the Chiefs take a QB at 5, but their oline is in far worse shape. I keep seeing Long or Clady projected there. You talk about Ryan not making it to 7 as if it's a certainty, but that's not true. It all depends on how the draft shakes out, but I'm thinking odds are he will be.

So you do agree that adding a 1st day OL is a need, just differing on the name? Of course there's no guarantee that Cason lasts to the second, but if he does, the Pats have the ammo to move up and get him.
