This is what the patriots do, they identify talent and then trade down until there is no one left to trade down with.

you could see how many teams were milking the clock trying to trade down, they couldent find anyone and had to pick. Even baltimore who many consider the best drafters had a huge problem with the language of a deal with the bears and it cost them a spot.

The Patriots not only manage to find a trade partner, they manage to fleece that trade partner.

Solder at #17 shouldn't surprise anyone, nor should it worry anyone, the Giants, eagles, colts and bears all were interested in O-linemen, since the patriots picked before each of these teams, they were able to pick the player they valued the most at the position, this is a great thing, because the patriots did something similar last year, picking Mccourty and leaving the jets with Kyle Wilson.

The Patriots must value Solder Greatly picking him at 17, if Scar and BB are confident in picking Solder at 17, so am i.

The Patriots have set themselves up nicely for round 2 and 3, they now have 5 picks on day 2, with ammunition in the later rounds to move around and pick up who they value most.

with the recent success the patriots have had in round 2, we should be enthusiastic headed there, the patriots i suspect will move around round 2 and pick the players they want who are left.

i suspect the patriots will trade #33 in exchange for something similar to what they got from NO, a 2012 first and a 2011 2nd, if they cant find this deal, they are still in great position to get any player they want at great value be it Ayers, Reed, Bowers, Acho, Williams, moore ECT.

it should also be mentioned that trading the 28 pick really sets the price for 33, where some teams might try to argue giving up a first round pick and a second round pick as the saints did was too much, the patriots can point out that #33 is only 5 picks off.

with the vast amount of teams still needing a quarterback and the wide variety of 1st round talent prospects on the board, if the patriots trade #33, it would surely be in exchange for a 1st and 2nd round pick in 2011.

I don't have a problem, Tom Brady is what win us game, and without a good OL around him , it doesn't matter how good of a pass rusher he is, we will lose way more, plus it was our biggest need. However drafting a OL is realllly boring, if it was a DE/OLB i would be sleepy well tonight. The only thing that brother me, that Nate was not or might not be worth a trade we made for Richard Seymour, when i put in that perspective then i get frustrated, but BB made the right choice.

Seymour isnt going to help this team anymore, you can argue whether it was the right move in 2009 all you want, but this is a different team with different needs. 5 tech DE is an important position, but the patriots passed on 3 separate 5 tech DEs who were heavily mocked to them numerous times, so they must not have valued them enough to pick them up at those positions.

Filling the DE void is important, but this team is as good as it is because it was created using the same value based drafting they are using once again in this 2011 NFL Draft, if Belichick thinks by drafting Cameron Jordan he would be trying to force a square peg into a round hole, he doesn't believe his chances of success when drafting that player is high, thus a couple of years from now, we may call Cameron Jordan a bust but it might have more to do with the fact that he was drafted because the patriots would have drafted for need rather than for value.

At least when you draft for value, the Cap Suffers less from your mistakes (if you make them), which is why i think the patriots would have been fine drafting any of the 4 5tDEs in this draft, but only at the right price.

And the right price starts tomorrow.

I am not surprised they took an OT, the draft is only one part of the process. On Monday free agency starts, they can use some of the future draft picks to trade for veterans in addition to the free agents they bring in.

Phase 1 - Draft - add 1-2 possible starters and cheap depth
Phase 2 - Free agents, spend the LT money on a defensive starter (insert your name here, Kiwanuka, Edwards, etc.)
Phase 3 - Trade the draft picks for veterans (Steve Smith, Chad Jackson, etc.)

This team is so young but is also a contender, I would rather bring in some proven veterans than have 500 rookies learning on the job. Historically the odds are less than 50% that the draft picks make any impact on the roster.

I was happy with McCoutry and I am not just saying that; check the posts but the Solder pick had me screaming. He is giant doughboy....but after a calmed down I realized that not only does BB know what he is doing but Dante does too so I am not too worried.

We've got 2 bookend tackles in Vollmer and Solder now. Koppen is still firing the snaps. Mankins, depending how it all plays out is still our starting LG. Kaczur, even though he's not happy is still in the rotation. throw in the rest of the bunch and we've got a good OL with alot of upside -Wendall, Levoir, Ohrenberger, Connelly, ect. If Light gets resigned Brady might never have to wash his uniform again.
