The first pick of day 2 of the draft should be the Patriots via Carolina.
Carolina looks like they are going to get the 1st overall pick.
They have a tough schedule the remainder of the season and they have a
ton of injuries.
I remember last year there was a lot of trade talk around that Rams top
2nd round pick prior to day 2 of the draft.
I would not be suprised to see Belichick trade that pick to a poor team for a
1st in 2012.
There are always a couple of players who slip into the 2nd round who
were ranked in the top 20 prior to the draft.

Guess which team doesn't have a 1st this year? And, probably thinks they're headed to the Super Bowl next year. Hmmmm
Re: The first pick of day 2 of the draft should be the Patriots via Carolina.
I'm all for trying to get another first for 2012. I've loved the past few years of having multiple picks in each of the first few rounds. Heck, I'd even like to see that Minnesota third become a second for next year.
My only concern is the pick is basically a 1st anyway and it wouldn't be worth it to move ahead just a few picks. But the front office has shown a strange talent for evaluating who's going to have a down year. Lately, every time we trade into next year, the pick seems to overperform. See San Diego, Tennessee, Minnesota, etc.

Huh! I could've sworn it was in here that somebody else brought this up, yesterday, but I can't find it...Maybe it was at the other Site.
In any case: Excellent idea for a Thread.
What I'm sure you're thinking about, when you bring this up, is the 2009 trade between the Jets and Lions, where the Lions traded the first pick of the second day of the draft ~ the first pick of the 3rd Round ~ after the Jets had had all night to work themselves into a lather about it.
The Lions traded #65 to the Jets for #76, #115, and #228, if I have it right.
As a Lion Fan ~ I have about a dozen Surrogate Teams ~ and as a Jet Hater, I was delighted about the trade ~ which was the Jets going after HB Shonn Greene, you'll recall ~ but I must admit that I was surprised, just now, at how little a Premium the Jets payed, at least according to The Grid:
265 points for 277 points. Not a rich Premium at ALL.
Even so: I believe that the true impact of such trades far exceeds the values suggested by The Grid: Depth of Talent is an utterly vital component of The Championship Quest, one that Coach Bill The Mad has repeatedly shown that he has mastered, and whose true Import is yet to be appreciated, I believe.
The continued shockingly stellar play of QB Ryan FitzPatrick, the surprisingly scrappy tenacity of the Bills, themselves, the emotional boost of finally getting that first win...and the dire road ahead for the Panthers, as you point out...definitely paints us as a prime candidate for that CatBird position.
It's a very interesting subject, indeed.

So the Pats will have back to back picks at 32 and 33, great! Yeah the 33rd pick in this latest version of the draft has become quite vaulable. St. Louis kept it last year, but give BB a night with 31 other teams calling, and he will spin that into something.

Indeed: Carolina itself, of course, and that spectacular San Fran pick in 2008.
Me, I'd prefer to invest the LOT, this year. As it's a virtual dead certainty that this will be the very last year before a Rookie Salary Cap is imposed ~ and the one in BasketBall cut the Premium salaries in HALF, if my understanding, is correct ~ then Juniors and Red Shirt Sophomores will be STAMPEDING FOR THE EXITS!!
...which would, of course, leave a barren and desolate WasteLand of a 2012 Draft Class.
Were Coach Bill to do so, anyway, though, my recommendations would be to target the following teams:
Prime Candidates
Washington
Chicago
Possible Candidates
Kansas City
Tampa
Seattle
1 ~ The RedSkins and Bears are run by Fools with rich recent histories of flushing Premium Picks down the toilet, and both are thin teams that have every chance of putting up a 10 Loss Stinker, next year.
2 ~ The Chiefs, SwashBucklers, and SeaHawks are all young teams, experiencing Break Out Years, which makes them perfect candidates: The expectations of such teams are usually LOFTY after such years, making them particularly vulnerable to the allure of getting one more impact player...and more often then not, they usually fall flat on their FACES, that second year.
***
If we actually make such a trade, an "even up" deal would be #33 for a 2012 1st Rounder from a team that rated #13 in 2011. A deal with any team finishing with a better record than that would warrant an additional pick, as was the case in both the Baltimore trade in 2003 and the San Fran trade in 2007.

I wouldn't be doing to lower someone's salary. Just gives you an extra 19 hours to evaluate whom you are going to select instead of 10 minutes.
Interesting. My knee jerk reaction was to say that of course they are on the clock and have to use it. But in the event of a team missing their time allotment, the next team up typically gets on the clock. Wouldn't that be...the Pats? So, 19 hours do pick/trade two consecutive picks...?
Re: The first pick of day 2 of the draft should be the Patriots via Carolina.
Carolina certainly looks like a bottom-dweller this year and should vie for the worst record. However, if they are tied for the worst record don't they rotate the order after the 1st round? For instance, if Carolina tied for the worst record with two other teams, and Carolina gets the top pick, wouldn't they get the 3rd pick of the 2nd round? Or is that only in the case of having the same strength of schedule ?
