Ohh, to dream, but this would be my ultimate draft for the patriots, what are your thoughts?

Trades:


Trade down from 27 with the colts for pick 34 and 97. Colts could use Fleener or a RB and want to get ahead of NYG.



Trade down from 31 with Rams for pick 37, pick 171 and next years #2.


34. Kendall Reyes, DE/DT, Uconn- For my money, Reyes is the best 5 technique in the draft. Stays lows, uses his hands better than any Dlineman I watched. Keeps pad level low. Good burst and can get after the passer. Very stout against the run even though he was consistently double and triple teamed.


37. Shea Mclellin, OLB, Boise St.- Maybe my favorite player in all the draft. Did just about everything at Boise St. that the Patriots do. He is scheme diverse, can play with his hand in the ground or standing up, played some ILB as well and is decent at dropping back into coverage. Not an elite pass rusher, but does make plays in the backfield


48. Janoris Jenkins, CB- He could go anywhere from top 20 to dropping to the mid to late 2nd round, it is my dream that he does in fact fall because of the off the field issues he has. His talent is top 10, he is the best cover corner in the draft and its not even close. IF he can get his head on straight and into a strong locker room that keeps his off field stuff in check, he will be a steal.


62. Harrison Smith, S- Might go late first round because it is such a poor safety class but he realistically could still be here. Is he a game changing safety like Palamalu or Ed Reed-no, but he is a rangy guy who is a sure tackler and can be a solid starter that you do not have to worry about for years. Instantly a starter for the patriots.


TRADE:93 to Broncos for picks 108 and 120



97. Josh Chapman, DT Chapman is a no frills nose tackle in the 3-4. Playing in basically the same system at alabama as he will in new england he is a perfect backup for Vince Wilfork. He also could play the nose allowing Wilfork to play some DE as well so he brings diversity along the line.


108. Greg Childs, WR If Childs had not gotten hurt he would have been a 2nd round pick in last years draft. Still played hurt this year and watched his stock plummet. Now fully healthy he ran a 4.41 at his pro day and is 6'3 inches tall with good hands and runs nice routes.


120. Robert Turbin, RB Turbin is a huge running back that has got good speed. A downhill, one cut guy who will plow you over and make you think about tackling him again.



TRADE: 126 to Vikings for 138 and next years 4th round pick.



138. Derek Wolfe, DE- Wolfe is kind of a one trick pony, but he is very good at that. He is an interior line pass rush specialist that the Patriots need after Mike Wright had to retire because of concussions. Coming in on passing downs Wolfe can get after the passer and create havoc in the backfield.


171. Tom Compton, OT Compton is a small school kid who plays with a nasty demeanor. Tall and lean like the patriots like them, he moves well and has more room to grow. Really like him as aback up tackle who could play significant minutes if there is an injury and I do not think you would see a significant drop off.


Summary:


Patriots give the defense a shot in the arm with a lot of young talent both up front and in the secondary. Reyes, Mclellin, Jenkins, and Smith all would have to be considered starters from day one with Chapman and Wolfe seeing plenty of playing time in specific scheme and situations.



On offense, I think Childs is a guy who can be the deep threat WR to go with a guys like Welker and LLoyd. Turbin would fit in nicely to the running back by committee approach the patriots like to play, but could be a work horse if an injury or one of last years picks does not develop. Compton could be a practice squad type of player year 1 but I do see him as a guy who could make the team and back up either tackle spots or even play some guard in a pinch.


Add on the additional 2nd and 4th round picks for next years draft and the patriots are set.

I will stay in my lofty state of bliss until reality sets in 1 week from today. Sadly, it is sounding more and more likely that McLellin may even go before the Patriots pick at 27.

- ideally the first 4 picks should be DE / DT, DE/OLB, S and DB barring a player we have a high grade on dropping. That's what you took so I like it.

- I know you acknowledge it's a dream, but if I'm dreaming about getting Harrison Smith at 63, might as well hope Melvin Ingram falls to 27 while I'm at it.

- Even though Chapman doesn't have ideal measurements I'll make room for anybody who will play, and play well, 1/2 a season w/ a f'ed up knee

While it is my "dream" draft, I did try to stay realistic for the most part. Is Smith going to fall that far, probably not, but, it is not out of the question considering not that long ago that is where most sites had him rated.
Ingram to 27 would be a pipe dream as I cannot come up with any type of scenario where that potentially could happen.

You are right though, Ingram at 27 would be and should be considered if doing a dream draft.

I think there is a general consensus about most of these players on this board which means we will only see one of them drafted in a best case scenario.

Two nitpicks.
Clairborne isn't close??? (regarding Jenkins comment above)

There isn't roster space for nine draft picks.

Midwest, you did a nice job. Good picks, I could certainly live with the first 4. However then you go through a lot of work to squeeze 5 more picks out of this draft, all reasonable picks. However here's a task for you. Sit down at your desk and create a projected 53 man roster and tell me how you are going to fit more than 4 of those picks on to it.

My point is why draft them if they have no chance to make the roster. BB, through FA, has already filled the roster with experienced and tested guys. Roster spots that used to go guys like you picked at after the 2nd round. If there is no need, why draft them?

I guess that statement might be a little bold because Claiborne is very good. That being said, I do think Jenkins is better than Claiborne in that regard.

Okay-Greg Childs. Childs could easily be a better option at WR than Donte Stallworth, Anthony Gonzalez, or, sad as it may be, Deion Branch and OchoCinco. I would have a WR corp of Welker, LLoyd, Edelman, Childs, and let the remaining 4 fight it out for the last spot.

Chapman- Chapman could take a roster spot from Ron Brace or Kyle Love.

Wolfe could take a roster spot from Kyle Love or Myron Pryor

Compton is a tougher fit to get on the 53 man roster, but to my defense, I believe I wrote he could be a practice squad guy to start the season.

Turbin would take BJGE spot and I think a guy like Woodhead might not make the team next year as I feel like his production really went down after his first year.
