Default Brian Brohm wonders why he is not the top QB in the 2008 draft & stats prove his case

I looked at both career stats and the evidence does show that Brohm has actually been the better QB over his collegiate career.

So the question remains, beside the so so last year in Louisville,Brohm still had thrown for 30 TDs, What makes anyone think Ryan is even worthy of the first QB taken?

Do you smell a possible bust in Ryan and a bargain for a late 1st round team or early second in Brohm?

I am glad the Pats don't need a QB because this is the absolute worst draft class in MANY years at the QB spot - If Colt Brennan or Woodson ends up the best QB it would not be totally shocking.

Every year there are busts and surprises... and this year will be no different.

As a purported Patriots fan, you should know that loftier numbers ≠ better quarterback.

The Louisville team underachieved big time this past year and Brohm is taking a hit for that (deserved or not...you decide). As for Brohm himself, give him 2 more inches in height and I think people would have overlooked the team's record in 2007.

Funny thing about that is Henne is the exact same height and Michigan underachieved in 2007 as well. Only difference is that Henne has a big arm and is rising. I think the top QBs this year will somehow find their way to the team that fits them best:

Ryan = Atlanta (top intangibles, face of franchise)
Flacco = Baltimore (big, strong, tough)
Henne = Chicago (big arm for playing in nasty weather)
Brohm = Carolina (smart and accurate)

KC and Miami may have something to say about this though.

I agree with Brohm.

I would take him first.

He is a Drew Brees clone though slower speedwise. Ryan is a big ?. Henne just sucks. I know very little about Flacco having never seen him play.

FWIW, I'm SHOCKED that Matt Ryan will go as high as he will.

Nice kid, I'm rooting for him... but he threw 19 interceptions last year. His best game against good competition was probably his first game of the year, and he still threw two picks.

He's just really, really overrated, IMO.

College stats for Qbs are very deceiving, contrary to what football outsiders suggests, when it comes to predicting a Qbs NFL potential. They are one factor, but a very blunt instrument. The competition levels, coaching, offensive scheme, surrounding talent are so variable that Qb stats alone are not a dependable indication of future success. They have some value, to show the player can be accurate and stay healthy. Beyond that people are trying to read too much into it, and the substance isn't there.

Combine college stats with field vision, arm strength, pocket presence and poise under pressure, and then you have something.

I agree...If Brohm came out last year he would have been a top-ten selection. Actually, I like all three of the next-tier QBs. Henne was brilliant in the bowl game, which was the first time he was healthy in months. Flacco is a specimen.

There are many questions about Brohm's arm strength. Teams that play in wintry/windy conditions could opt for Flacco or Henne instead.

There's a lot that goes into being an NFL QB, but I'm a firm believer that you have to have a minimum standard of arm strength to be successful. If you can't throw a 12-yard out pattern on a rope, then you probably can't play in this league. See what's been happening to Chad Pennington for a good example of what happens if you can't do that: Defenses don't have to play the medium-to-deep pass, a linebacker crowds the box full time, and DBs sit on the little crosses, flares and screens and light up the receiver after he catches it. A QB has to have remarkable athletic ability to even survive long in those cases.

Brohm meets that threshhold....but just barely.

The stats probably show he was a better passer, not a better QB.

Intangibles are important with any position, but are the most important factor with QBs.

Ryan Leaf had better stats than Peyton Manning, yet Manning went before Leaf. A mistake? No.

There were quite a few QBs with better stats than Brady.

I have no idea which will be the better QB. I do think it is silly that we as fans think we can watch YouTube highlights and buy the SI draft issue, and think we are smarter than NFL front offices and their scouting departments with all their full-time, experienced staff.

But hey, we're fans. It's what we do.

At least we can all agree that Dan Snyder is clueless.
