If the Pats trade up to #5, then it automatically implies that they believe he is worth that money. (The converse of that statement is not true, BTW--just because they don't draft up doesn't automatically imply that he isn't worth it.)

I agree with this, and think #62 is too early for another CB.

If we trade up for long, I can live with this, as he's the #1 ranked prospect on my Pats board. For those curious, Cason is the #2 ranked prospect overall.

With Shepard on board, I'd still draft another CB...maybe round three on. Curious as to where CBs Wheatley and Williams will go, as I tend to ignore most consensus rankings this close to the draft (until Gosselin chimes in).

Don't think the Patriots will be acquiring 2 players demanding $40M+ deals and a combined $35M+/- in bonus and guarantees having never played a snap in either the NFL or in this system in one day. If we trade for Shepard we might as well have kept Asante. He was familiar with the system and a lot more durable. You're in effect just letting he and the Eagles blackmail us this year...Long is a conversion project to OLB and we'll be paying him on par with AD and almost double what the guy he will EVENTUALLY replace has ever gotten here?

I think we trade down or not at all. If not at all we take a player at #7 who is a top ten on our board who will start day 1 and projects to be as Bill says an 8 time pro bowler. Only players I see who can be that HERE this year are OL, because unless we plan to trade a DL there is no starting position for any DL for 2 years - and you don't take a player that high to shelf him for a year or two as depth/conversion project or backup or a rotational player as you could at the bottom of the round. I think we use some day 2 picks and maybe even some 2009 picks to maneuver up and into the second where Bill has lots of projected targets. And that is where we address other concerns including corner.

I'd be happy with that. I don't think they'll trade for Sheppard but I wouldn't be surprised if they make the trade for Chris Long if he's available at #5. I think he's going to be a game-changing talent and is the best player in the draft.

Lito Shepherd for a late 3rd? You're dreaming right?

However trading up a couple spots for Chris Long I am all for.

If I remember correctly, don't you have a similar reservation in regard to Mike Jenkins? I'm not completely sure about Godfrey, but I do believe Jenkins will be a good CB in the NFL, and he could work quite well within NE's system.

FWIW, I went back over some of my tape/video recently, and I think Jenkins has good feet for the position.

Jenkins reminds me of Geno Wilson. Could Geno have played cb in the NFL, from his rookie year on? Probably, but his impact NFL position was FS.

Sure, I'm dreaming. We may need to part with #62 instead, in which case our second corner is at #94. Or we might swap 1st and 2nds with Philly.

I'd need to change my pants if we got Chris ***ing Long and Lito on the same day.

There is no reason for this not to happen, if the team wants it to happen. I suppose KC could pick Long, but I don't see that happening. If that is a great concern, then we should trade with Oakland. After all, Oakland could trade with the jets and still get their man at #8 (if they are OK with Ellis or McFadden).

We have the picks at #7, #62, #69 to make both deals. I am fine with using our first three picks for these two players. That would mean our #62 or #69 for Shepherd and the other pick to KC or even to Oakland to move up. #62 should be enough to trade with Oakland. If #69 is enough to get Shepherd, then we're home.
