I can't see see us passing on OT (or trade down a bit and then picking an OT) if Light is not re-signed.
If Light is re-signed, there is less need with both Light and Kaczur available in addition to Vollmer.

I agree. I think Pats could get a couple of good interior linemen at #60, #74 or #92. I would love to get Moffit. Seems to have Mankins like attitude. Can play C, G or T.
I don't see why they can't do both as long as they get a tackle that is capable of playing guard. I'm not opposed to bringing Light back as long as it's just 2 or 3 years. He's a pretty average LT at this point.

I can. Chances are there will be a front-seven defender on the board that carries a higher grade than any available OT. Combine that with BBs history (Light and Vollmer in 2nd, Kaczur, Kenyatta Jones in 4th) and the presence of guys like LeVoir and Ojinnaka on the roster, I'll be shocked if OT is the call at #17.
Bottom line is that I'm not sure that the OT available will carry first round grades. Right now the only guy I have a 1st round grade on is Carimi. Other GMs will reach for Costonzo, Solder, and others on perceived upside, but Belichick will more likely take a guy with potential later in the draft I think.

I can't remember a draft with a weaker first round for OL so taking an OL at #17 is likely going to be a serious reach. I suppose it's possible they could have an OL with that high a grade who is still available then but doubt it seriously. Re-signing Light is a priority imo, he's a really good OT who has always been completely underappreciated by Patriot fans but who has protected Brady extremely well throughout his time in NE. I don't believe he's looking to break the bank and think they can re-sign him to an affordble deal and move him to RT for the remainder of his career with Vollmer taking over at RT. Kazcur provides adequate depth with LeVoir competing with whomever they bring in as free agents and picks. I believe rebuilding the OL for the future is a priority but don't see the high end talent there to use first rounders in this draft to do so. As you mentioned in another thread there seems to be a good number of OL with second and third round grades so that would be the more likely point to take OL. So far Wisniewski is the OL I like the most in this draft and he can probably play all 3 interior positions. Wisniewski at #28 would be a decent pick and interior OL is a higher priority than OT right now.
The more I know about this OT class in combination with various team needs, the more I'm inclined to think that none of them go before #21 or so, and maybe only one of them in the first round.
I'd re-sign Light if reasonably possible. But an OT still might get serious consideration in the second even so, depending on which OGs are available when. I'm only about 60% confident in the full-season reliability of both Light and Kaczur for 2011 and I'd hate to have to fall back on LeVoir or Ojinnaka for an extended stretch. I'd feel a little more comfortable with, say, Carimi or Castonzo in the fold working with Dante (or even Carpenter later).
If Light can't be signed, I might be looking at an OT earlier, but I'm still not certain that it would be necessary to use the #17.
The way things usually shake out in the end, "boring" BB-type players should fall into the late first and the second, so the #17 may well get traded down to the later first round or early second regardless.
Let Light walk, move Vollmer to LT, draft an RT at 28/33/60
What do you think about making Light a Guard? It seems that it would minimize his weakness, leck of edge mobility.

I feel like Light would rather get paid as an LT somewhere else rather than as a guard here.
He made about 4.5 million this past season. He's on the wrong side of 30 and has had a lot of trouble with speed rushers, I'm not sure he'd get a huge deal elsewhere. I'm thinking that with enough incentives in his contract he might want to stay here.
Anyway, I was curious to hear your thoughts about how Light at Guard would work on the field.
