How do they work in the US? Don't they need a working visa or something? Getting a working visa isn't that easy. Or does Canada have a deal whereby they can work in the US?

Also, what about Vollmer, now that I think about it. He went to college here, which is possible on a student visa, but what about long term?

I bring this up because one player the patriots might target is OT Watkins from Baylor. He's kind of similar to Mankins in size and description of abilities.

Actually, getting a "Work Visa" is not that hard at all. Especially if you have a company like the New England Patriots, that is willing to sponsor you.

Also, do you bother to put any real thought into stuff like this?? There are several thousand, if not tens of thousands, of professional athletes who get work visas every year for the different sports. The only time you run into trouble is if you have a criminal record.

The fundamental principle of a work visa is that you couldn't hire a US citizen to do the job just as well.

Sports is pretty much the ideal industry in which to make such a claim.

This is pretty much spot on, I actually work at an immigration law firm, and I have issues with alot of what they do, but I don't have the same issue with athletes.

NOTE: I'm not a lawyer.

It is called a "P-1" visa, 1/2 of the Red Sox have one. They are pretty easy to get. The only real problems they had was after 9/11 they began to scurtinize the paperwork more closely, that is when many Dominicans got 3-6 years older (they had lied about being younger so they would appear to be more advanced to the MLB scouts). Once you are inside the US (especially now) nobody is coming after you for any immigration violations. The only problem that could arise is IF the Pats played Buffalo in Toronto, or if they play in London again. But since they both made it back in after the Tampa game last year, I'd say they are OK.

The only way this causes either of them a problem, is if they get convicted of a serious crime, and even then, it would only come to light at a border crossing........
