Tropical treat?… The University of Hawaii had its Pro Day today and all eyes were on DL Ikaika Alama-Francis. Alama-Francis, who didn't worked out at the Combine due to an injury, was watched by about 60 people, including Jets HC Eric Mangini, Packers GM Ted Thompson, Dolphins GM Randy Mueller and Browns GM Phil Savage. Alama-Francis (6-5 1/8, 276) ran his 40s in 4.85 and 4.88 seconds. He also had a 35-inch vertical and a 9-foot-6 broad jump. Alama-Francis supposedly looked outstanding in positional drills and he also did the tight end drills and really looked good. That kind of position versatility is always attractive to NFL people.
I was wondering is he any relation to our former "All-World TE"?
His bio says that he is the son of Joseph Francis. I know that Russ' father was a legendary wrestler in Hawaii (hence Russ' appearance in Wrestlemania one year). How many 6'5" Hawaiians named Francis can there be?
Maybe use for one of those 6th round picks.

He's expected to go in the second, and that's just as a 4-3 DE, his stock as a 3-4 DE or OLB may push him up the board.

doesnt hawaii play a 3-4? he played DE there so hes a 3-4 DE and a good 1
Do they? I know Virginia and UNLV play a 3-4. Penn State and Michigan do or did. WV plays a 5-3-3. I'd not heard Hawaii did anything from the norm.

Ikaika's dad was the backup QB for the Packers during the Lombardi years.
Russ Francis was born in Seattle but grew up in Hawaii.
No relation as far as I know.

Yes, UH's primary alignment is a 3-4.

I always like a real scout's take on a prospect -- such as this one:
Quote:
Here are observations of a veteran NFL scout who saw UH play several times over the course of these players' careers. He was also at Thursday's Pro Day in Carson, Calif. His team does not allow him to be identified. Ikaika Alama-Francis DE/TE
"He has a true defensive end type of body. The thing on him, he's just raw, a lot of upside. They did throw the ball to him (at the Pro Day), but I'm a little bit more (inclined to believe) he's a defensive end. He might be a little heavy in the 280s. If he's going to be a defensive end, I think he can get away with 265, or 270. If you sat in everyone's draft room, it's all over the place. The buzz out there is first-day guy. Second or third round."

Interesting article, I wish there were some 3-cone and ss scores to get a better feel for his OLB potential.
There was some nice notes on other players:
OT Tala Esera: Sounds very interesting as a second day OG prospect who like Mankins could be a good emergency OT.
RB Nate Ilaoa: I keep wondering if this kid can manage his weight, but he could be a nice bowling ball down the middle.
S Leonard Peters: Interesting that the Jest are looking at him.
DE Melila Purcell: 6'5" 289, could be a decent second day/UDFA prospect the way Wright was.
