There's exceptions here and there although Thomas has never played in a defense like ours. I'm not saying he couldn't play for us, just that he leaves me unexcited.

According to Draftstock.com, Abbate's height (post combine) is 5'9" and three quarters. Man that is short.

From the NFL Combine stats Abbatte is 5-9 3/4, 231 lbs and runs the 40 in just under 5 seconds (4.98). He is 3 inches shorter than Bruschi, and unless he gets his time down to the 4.7 range he wouldn't be drafted until the 6th round IMO.

From Abbate's Agility test:
"Campus: 4.67 in the 40-yard dash … 360-pound bench press … 500-pound squat … 315-pound power clean … 32-inch vertical jump … 31 5/8-inch arm length … 9¼-inch hands."

Compare that to 6'2" 239lbs Michigan ILB David Harris:
"Campus: 4.66 in the 40-yard dash … 355-pound bench press … 30¾-inch arm length … 9 1/8-inch hands."

I can find you about four different height measurements and 40 times for most of these guys. Some who ran slow at the combine (Reggie Nelson) blazed at their Pro Days. It's just the name of the game.

Also, if his timing slow and coming in short at the combine means he'll be around in the fourth, fifth, or even sixth round that's fine with me. If the guy slips and NE only has to take a flyer pick on him all the better.

Stats are stats, Abbate was far and away the better performer of the 2. Do you recall a great stats guy going into the combine? I can come up with Mike Mammula and he was god awful. Abbate would be a great mid round addition to the Defense.
