HB-2 sites thought LenDale White would fall to #21(not likely, IMO)
---4 thought we would take Lawrence Maroney of Minn.
OT-Eric Winstonof Tampa Bay (?) got a mention
WR-Derrick Hagen of Ariz St did as well.

My impressions-- Not very knowledgeable about college players, but I was surprised about the perceived neeed on D in the first round. Maybe more about value, esp. in the '05 LB class. Many on this board are interested in a high round choice at O-line, but the gurus don't seem to see the need for it, or don't believe BB will pull that trigger 2 yrs in a row. OTOH, any of the multiple picks would probably be capable of contributiing. It will be interesting to see what BB/Pioli do.

Ashworth has proven his ability as a swing tackle and the Pats under BB aren't known for going out of pocket in a bidding war unless the player is dominating at their position. Assuming he is gone, the 2006 and 2007 rosters project an increased "need" to build depth at OT.

2006: Light, Kaczur, Gorin, Britt, Krug, Mankins, Roehl (NFLE)
2007: Light, Kaczur, Gorin, Mankins

On top of that, G depth relates to T depth. Mankins is the most visible example, but Krug, Gorin, and Kaczur have all been considered as G options in previous discussions on OL flexibility.

2006: Mankins, Hochstein, Kaczur, Yates (ERFA), Krug, Gorin, Steitz (NFLE)
2007: Mankins, Gorin, Kaczur

Drafting a first day OT builds depth in two areas on the OL.

Possible day 1 "Patriot" (quicker, more mobile) Prospects (position relates to 'normal' college position):

LT Eric Winston, 6-7 310-ish, Miami (see your question above)
LT Jonathan Scott 6-7 310-ish, Texas
LT Daryn Colledge, 6-5 300-ish, Boise State
LT Andrew Whitworth, 6-7 325-ish, LSU (decent mobility for the extra size)
LG Rob Sims, 6-4 310-ish, Ohio State (started LT in prior years)

Winston is a probable first rounder with a bum wheel that will get lots of scrutiny as the end of April nears. The "value" arguments will get more interesting as supply and demand factors weigh in during the FA period.

I think the best value might be at OT, where both Jonathan Scott and Marcus McNeil should be available. In that case, if we are looking at OTs, than a trade down 5 sport would be likely

Scott looked decent in the Senior Bowl at LT (he'll need TE/RB help against speed rushers in the pros), and good at RT. He would be okay for us with swing tackle capability. McNeil didn't impress me in the game, though there are different reports of his prowess in practice.

Looking to the future, BB-type players are going to be harder to come by. An adequate back-up for Wilfork and a young MLB are probably needed this year, but if a DE/OLB is available it wouldn't hurt to build up some depth there either in ths LB-heavy year.

How about Joe Toledo, 6'6" 310, Washington. Very raw -- spent only a year at tackle after converting from TE -- but one of the quickest, most mobile OLs in the draft.

I know it--with Tedy Bruschi at linebacker and Joe Toledo at tackle, it would take a Bronko Nagurski to stop us.

That history helps mitigate his performance in the Shrine Game. I'd have no problem with him, but as raw as he is, he would be a better second day pick. John was asking about the preference of a number of posters for a first round tackle, my suggestions are for players who seem to have late first/early second value.

Richard Collier 6'7" 345 Valdosta State Rd 5-UDFA Notes: RT, adjusted well to speed of 1-A & 1-AA players in Hula Bowl
