Default Reiss: Patriots to host LB Jason Williams

Quote:
The Patriots are scheduled to host Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams on a pre-draft visit at Gillette Stadium, the Globe confirmed tonight.

Williams' visit was initially reported by Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Williams is scheduled for 10 pre-draft visits, as teams work to gather more information on him because he wasn't invited to the NFL Combine. At 6-foot-1, 242 pounds, he'd project to inside linebacker in the Patriots' base 3-4 defense.

Williams' stock began to rise after an impressive 40-yard dash at Northwestern's Pro Day in March.

TCU MLB Jason Phillips Scouting Report
Height: 6-1, Weight: 239, 40 Yard Dash: 4.69

Strengths: Good size with solid bulk...really physical and aggressive...productive team leader...shows great awareness...physical hitter who is also a solid wrap up tackler...offers some scheme versatility...can handle zone coverage assignments...plays with a nasty demeanor and is not afraid of contact...decent top end speed...

Weaknesses: Not an elite natural athlete...a bit stiff through the hips...does not have great lateral range...does not offer much as a blitzer...sometimes he is a bit too aggressive...lacks the quickness in short space to guard man to man...lacks sideline to sideline range...a true "thumper"…suffered a knee injury at the combine that may knock him back some…

Overall: A four year starter at TCU, Jason Phillips offers some scheme versatility, but perhaps projects best as a 3-4 inside linebacker. Some questioned his athleticism but he showed well at the 2009 scouting combine and should be able to develop into a top flight backup at worst. He does not quite offer the playmaking ability to develop into a star, but offers a lot of dependability at a hard to find position.

The guy ran a sub 4.5 40 as a linebacker. That's pretty crazy. He may need to put on about 10 lbs, but the speed is intriguing.

The DuSable graduate started getting traction when he performed well at the East-West Shrine Game and then turned heads at his pro day March 4 when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds with 14 teams in attendance. That was on a basketball-court surface though and there were some questions for a guy who is 6-1, 241 pounds. Some didn't believe he was that fast. Try faster. Any of those questions were answered when he showed up March 12 at Northwestern's pro day and ran again. This time, on a slow FieldTurf surface, he clocked in between 4.42 and 4.48 seconds according to scouts we polled at the event. The interest only grew. - Brad Biggs, The Chicago Sun-Times

I still think ILB is more of an issue than OLB, we have a solid starter at each but I have more confidence in Woods/Crable/Redd than Bruschi/Guyton.

You're not the first to confuse the two on this board! Maybe we should just say Jason *illi*s?

I'm not sure Liverpool was confusing the Jason's, I thought he was stating a preference. Of the two, I know Phillips can and will engage OL and win. Personally, I draft both of them.

People have mentioned "X" Williams as a SS prospect. Speed and coverage ability. What a find this could be?
