We really need 2 de's in the next 2 years. One to replace Big Sey, and the other to put in the rotation to replace J.Green. That's why I'd like one this year, and another next year.

They paid him 8M a year in 2006 when the cap was 94.5M. (it was later changed to 102M, but after Sey was signed). Thats 8.5% of the cap.

The cap this year is 127M. 8.5% of 127M is 10.75M/yr. Chances are, if there is a new CBA, the cap will be in the area of 138M. 8.5% of 138M is just under 12M. Unless hes getting 12M+ a year, its actually a cheaper deal than they gave him in '06.

He is not in the same position to demand the contract he got last time. In 2006 he went to 4 pro-bowls in a row, and was truly the best at his position. Now he hasn't been to a pro-bowl in 2 years and has been injury prone. He should come at a discount/incentive laden type deal this coming contract.

Exactly. Not to mention that he's 29 today. But for the majority of the 2010 season, he's going to be 31. He doesn't have too many more prime years left. I wouldn't be surprised of the Pats franchise him for 1 year and then let him go at 32.

The primary point I was making in this thread was that we need a player to replace at least ONE of Green and Seymour in 2010 and that we should draft the player now so that he has a year to develop.

My candidates are Jackson, Hood and Gilbert. I think that we need to use our first pick for a DE. We also need an OG or two for 2010, but there are plenty of interior linemen available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds who could be potential 2010 starters. That is NOT true for DE. It rarely is true for DE's.

Are you planning on cutting Le Kevin? Or taking 7 DL into the season?

I could see LeKevin winning one of the last three roster spots which could go to the best player left, no matter what the position. We'll see in camp. My personal preference would be to keep seven, but I could see LeKevin just not making the grade. As others have said, it could be Green who doesn't show his value in camp. Competition is good!

This is exactly why I believe he'll be allowed to leave. His age and injuries are up, and his production hasn't matched the last contracted he received. I expect they'll come in low (especially if they already have a replacement like Gilbert) and let him walk if negotiations become difficult.....
