Breaking down Rob Housler’s 2017 deal with the New England Patriots

On January 19, 2017 Rob Housler signed a one-year deal with the Patriots. He will receive a $775,000 salary and has a $5,000 offseason workout bonus.  His deal contains a split-salary provision that will lower his salary to $443,000 if he is placed on Injured Reserve. His $775,000 salary will count $615,000 against the 2017 cap since his deal qualifies for the Minimum Salary Benefit deal. $615,000 is the minimum salary for a player with two years of NFL experience.  Housler has five seasons. None of Housler’s money is guaranteed so there will be very little dead money if Housler is released during roster cutdowns.

Housler’s 2017 cap hit is $620,000 ($615,000 + $5,000).

After his signing and presuming that the Patriots will tender their 3 ERFAs tender their 3 ERFAs and sign their 10 practice squad players I now have the 54 Patriots on their 2017 roster with a total cap commitment of $113,475,742. I now project the Patriots to be under the 2017 cap by $61,168,593.

Rob Housler who will turn 29 in March is now the second Patriot tight end signed for the 2017 season. I do expect the Patriots to tender Matt Lengel an ERFA offer.

A call for a donation

A long-time family friend, my youngest sister’s best friend, is on the board of directors of a soup kitchen and food pantry in Malden, Massachusetts that provided in 2015 the equivalent of 1,030,000 meals to hungry, homeless and isolated people. I am asking that if you have found my salary cap pages useful that if you are able to do so, please make a donation to the Bread of Life soup kitchen/food pantry.

You can make a donation below by clicking on the Donate button. I am hoping to raise five thousand dollars for the Bread of Life by the time the Patriots win their 5th Super Bowl. As of August 5th have raised $1,046. Please mention this website by typing in Patscap’s Drive for Five in the Purpose Field.
