The New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> return to the friendly confines of Gillette Stadium in Foxboro for their final regular season home game to take on the New York Jets. The game is scheduled for Saturday Christmas Eve, at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n

CBS will televise this week’s game and it can be seen locally on WBZ Channel 4 in Boston. Ian Eagle will handle play-by-play duties with Dan Fouts as the color analyst. Evan Washburn will work the sidelines. The game will also be aired on the Patriots flagship radio station 98.5 The SportsHub with Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on the call, produced by Marc Cappello.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Patriots<\/strong>\u00a0(12-2) improved to 7-0 on the road this season with a convincing 16-3 win over the Denver Broncos. Dion Lewis rushed for 95 yards and the Pats got three turnovers while holding the Broncos to just three points and shut them out for the final 53 minutes of the game.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Jets <\/strong>(4-10) were hammered by Miami last week. Career backup Matt Moore threw for four touchdowns in the win. QB Bryce Petty was hit hard and had to leave the game but is expected to play this weekend.<\/p>\n

We here at\u00a0PatsFans.com<\/a>\u00a0are continuing our \u201cRazor\u2019s Edge\u201d\u00a0column in 2016 to give some quick\u00a0analysis on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.<\/p>\n

Series History:<\/strong>
\nThe Patriots and Jets meet for the 116th<\/sup> time on Sunday in an intense rivalry that dates back to 1960. The Patriots hold a slight all-time 60-54-1 edge in the series that has been incredibly even and always tough.<\/p>\n

The Patriots hold a 32-25-1 edge overall at home and have won 9 of the last 11 meetings. The Pats won a close 22-17 win in the Meadowlands in the first meeting this season as Tom Brady hit Malcolm Mitchell with the game-winning\u00a0touchdown pass with less than two minutes to go. Mitchell had a pair of touchdowns in the game.<\/p>\n

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor\u2019s Edge.<\/p>\n

First up is the Patriots offense:<\/p>\n

Patriots RBs vs Jets Front Seven –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Patriots rushing offense is averaging 117.0 yards per game. LaGarrette Blount is in the middle of a career year with highs in rushing yardage 1060, and rushing touchdowns with 15. He and Dion Lewis are making a dynamic tandem that can keep the opponent\u2019s defense off balance.<\/p>\n

The Jets were one of the best run stuffing teams in the league, but have been fading down the stretch. They gave up nearly 250 yards in the win over the 49ers and are now allowing an average of 99.9 yards per game. The big men inside haven\u2019t been nearly as dominant and injuries, as well as poor play, are taking their toll.<\/p>\n

Look for the Patriots to make an even bigger effort this time to mix things up and run the ball more against the Jets front seven to open play action passing. Blount should see more of the ball this week as Josh McDaniels will look to setting the tone early in this one.<\/p>\n

Patriots WRs vs Jets Secondary –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Patriots passing game will look to get untracked after a slow week in Denver against a Jets secondary that has had its issues in coverage this season. Tom Brady is having an MVP type of season and will be looking to exploit mismatches in coverage.<\/p>\n

And they have too many weapons for the Jets to cover. Julian Edelman will work the short area of the field across the middle and move the sticks. While Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell work the intermediate routes on the perimeter. Dion Lewis and James White can catch out of the backfield and can split out wide when they recognize mismatches on linebackers. Newcomer Michael Floyd may see a bit of action in this one and if he does, Brady will try to test the waters deep.<\/p>\n

The Jets pass defense has taken a big step backward this season. They\u2019ve had trouble getting after the QB without blitzing and have logged just 23 sacks. Darrelle Revis has gone from being on an island to being picked on. The middle of the field will be a big area to target.<\/p>\n

Look for Tom Brady to go to Martellus Bennett more in this one. He and the backs will keep the Jets linebackers and safeties occupied. And then they\u2019ll take some shots down the field. With the running game opening play action, Brady should be primed for a big afternoon.<\/p>\n

Next up the New York offense:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jets RBs vs NE Front Seven –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>Matt Forte has been the Jets workhorse this season but his age may be finally starting to catch up to him. He\u2019s rushed for 813 yards on the season but is banged up with an injury and in his place has stepped Bilal Powell. Powell has been outstanding the past two weeks and has been a bright spot for Gang Green.<\/p>\n

The Patriots run defense has been very solid the past month allowing just 50 yards per game in the past four games. Alan Branch and Malcom Brown are outstanding inside at defeating the run game and the defensive ends have done a great job at setting the edge. LB Dont\u2019a Hightower is excellent at playing downhill and stopping runs for little to no gain once the linemen set the table. The Pats run defense is allowing just 87.9 yards per game<\/p>\n

The Jets must get the running game going to help out their inexperienced (Bryce Petty) QB. Powell is a guy who has given the Patriots trouble in the past and his speed at hitting the holes will be an area to watch. But with a beat up offensive line with only one starter from Week 1 remaining, the Jets will be hard pressed to establish a consistent running attack. The Patriots will try to force the game into Petty\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n

Jets WRs vs NE Secondary-\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Jets passing game has struggled in 2016 because of injuries (Eric Decker on IR) and the offensive line. But mostly, it\u2019s been the poor play of their QBs. Ryan Fitzpatrick was tossing too many interceptions and was finally replaced. Petty has flashed in small doses but he\u2019s thrown six picks against just three touchdowns this season.<\/p>\n

The Jets have the uber-talented Brandon Marshall and Quincy Enunwa as well as promising young WR in Robby Anderson outside. Powell is always dangerous out of the backfield, but the big question is, can the Jets inexperienced OL hold up to protect Petty this week?<\/p>\n

The Patriots struggles against the pass are beginning to get under control. After giving Jonathan Jones some early snaps against Denver, he was replaced at the second cornerback spot by Eric Rowe. Look for Matt Patricia to mix things up and show different coverages and bring pressure from safeties and corners and drop linemen into passing lanes. Trey Flowers has been very good at rushing the passer with seven sacks in the second half of the season.<\/p>\n

The key for Petty is to get Marshall and Enunwa involved early as well as Anderson. If the Patriots blitz, then he\u2019ll try to make them pay with dump offs to Powell. Chung will probably be assigned to Powell along with linebacker Kyle Van Noy. Petty\u2019s patience may be tested if the Patriots get off to a quick start. That will be another key to monitor.<\/p>\n

Special Teams-<\/strong>\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England<\/em><\/strong>
\n<\/em>The Patriots special teams had a very strong game on Sunday. Stephen Gostkowski was perfect from the field and seems to have hit a groove finally this season. His kicks were all right down the middle. Ryan Allen pinned the Broncos deep a few times and the coverage unit got a turnover. They just need a boost in the return game where Julian Edelman has been forced back into service after Cyrus Jones\u2019 season has been utterly forgettable.<\/p>\n

The Jets injury issues are being felt on their special teams\u2019 units. \u00a0Kicker Nick Folk has had three field goal attempts blocked. Lachlan Edwards ranks near the bottom of the league in punting and had one blocked and returned for a touchdown against Miami last week. Their kickoff return unit has eight players on it that weren\u2019t on the team at the beginning of the season.<\/p>\n

Next up, who wins and why\u2026<\/p>\n

Prediction:
\n<\/strong>This game on paper should be another nail biter where both teams know each other well and being divisional rivals, the scores are always close. Since the Butt Fumble game, a touchdown or less has been the difference in each game. But this one has a different feel to it. The Jets season is over at 4-10 and the players know that big changes are coming this spring. Many of these players won\u2019t be here next season.<\/p>\n

It is imperative from a Patriots standpoint to get off to a quick start. The Jets folded up their tents last week in Miami\u2019s blowout win. They\u2019ll be looking to ruin the Patriots chances for home field advantage\u00a0like they did in 2015. But a couple of quick scoring drives by Brady could have them thinking of heading home to open Christmas presents early. Opposing QBs have a passer rating of 100.2 against the Jets this season. Look for Brady to continue that trend on Saturday.<\/p>\n

I expect the Patriots to put a lot of different looks defensively on Petty. That\u2019s why it is imperative for them to stop the running game and force the ball into the young QB\u2019s hands. Brady and the running game will have big days. The Jets check out early for Christmas vacation and this one breaks the mold of close games. Patriots 31-14<\/strong><\/p>\n
